If they get close to canceling Studio 60, do you think they'll move it to Bravo? |
|
I hate Slate, but they had a blurb about St60 and I read the first paragraph. It seems the third episode lost a lot of viewers. I absofuckinlutely LOVE this show; That and Boston Legal are about the only reasons I have a TV other than movies. Do ya think maybe they'll let it live on Bravo??

1. Maybe NBC will give it the ol' "Scrubs shuffle". |
|
Move it around their schedule until only the most die hard fans look for it, then bury it completely. :-( (I haven't checked Scrubs' status yet for fear it's a goner).
ABC has seemed to do its best to kill 'BL' with its lack of promotion, yet it lives on for roughly 10 million people a week. It'll disappear the first 3 weeks of November, only to reappear after Thanksgiving.

it's weak weak weak. Sorkin is better than this, why on earth he's trying to write sketch comedy is beyond me. IMO, none of the sketch bits have been even remotely funny, and they take so much momentum from the narrative that each episode withers and dies. There is very little chemistry among the cast (and i thought Brad Whitford and Matt Perry would work really well together, a la TWW "Evidence of Things Not Seen").

a week too soon.
Last Monday's episode was one of the best hours of TV all season.
They've finally quit focusing on the damn skits. Now we're getting into building characters, etc. In other words, Sorkin's giving us a reason to care.

In a recent interview, Sorkin said they're changing the focus from the show to the characters. It was evident last Monday, and it was fabulous.

Luckily, the show airs on Sunday in Canada, so I was able to watch it again on Monday night on one of the US border stations, so I had a better idea of what was going on!
I like what they're doing with Cal's character (starting to emerge as different from "Danny" in TWW). And I didn't realize it at the time, but the elderly visitor was played by Eli Wallach. The plot pushed people around a bit, which I guess is to be expected when Sorkin's around ... still, there were some nice moments.
And moving on to more current events -- when they set up the conflict within Tom's family, I suspected that they were putting down some groundwork for some more development there. Sure enough, it looks like there will be some stuff in the next couple of episodes which is at odds with the "naive kid" image he's got so far. (It was kind of predictable, that his dad might not approve of his interest in architecture -- and the cultural history of American showbiz -- but oddly enough I actually know a guy who is a lot like that, and now estranged from his father.)

8. I agree. The hunt for a black staff writer was very well done. |
|
I like the fact that D.L. Hughley's character was embarrassed by the cliched, stereotype "black" humor. The smart, insightful comedian, however, was inspiring to watch. I can't wait to see him in future episodes. That's why I hope there ARE future episodes.

I was reading an article yesterday with quotes from people at NBC. They're cautiously optimistic. They're not thrilled about the ratings (duh), but Studio 60's the #4 show in terms of median audience income. That makes the advertisers happy, and if they're happy, NBC is happy.
Also, they were discussing the change in focus and the NBC guy said that he really likes what he's seen regarding future episodes.
In fact, I'll dig up that article and link it in this thread.

I don't care if they air it on friggin' public access channels--this is one of the best TV shows I have seen in a LONG time. As a professional writer, I am in constant awe of Sorkin's scripts. They are brilliant--the drama, the humor, the pacing, the way he handles "controversial" topics. All of it. The acting is top notch, and my Matthew Perry crush that I thought I had buried tidily after Friends ended is alive and kicking. Even if his character doesn't have much to smile about (I loves me the Perry smile).
'Course, I do get despondent thinking about the average tolerance level for intelligent TV in this country. Reality shows in all their icky incarnations have no problem with ratings, while a show like this drops through the rankings? Incredible. I weep for my fellow Americans' choice in entertainment.
I do think it would do better on another night, though--perhaps midweek. Maybe it's "too much" for a Monday night crowd tired from the first day back at work each week? I'm guessing. Anyway, maybe moving it wouldn't be a death knell, but instead would help it find an audience.

Not only is it Monday night, but it's flippin' LATE on Monday night. Its obvious audience are people with actual jobs. In fact, the audience's median income is $66,000.
Meanwhile, on both coasts the damn thing doesn't start until 10pm. Hello. The target audience has to get up and go to work in the morning. I admit, I absolutely LOVE the show, but sometimes I just simply can't stay up late enough to watch it. And other times, I watch it but I'm so half dead that it just kinda goes in one ear and out the other.
Thank God for TiVo.
But yeah, really crappy scheduling. But then, I don't think anyone has ever claimed that anyone at NBC actually knows how to run a network... :p

I don't watch anything "live" anymore, mostly because if I or Mr. MorningGlow try, MorningGlow Jr. says "Something else! My channels!" (Sigh. Toddlers. Whatcha gonna do?) Then, by the time I get him to bed, it's friggin' late and I'm cross-eyed.
I've found myself watching a lot of eps online at lunchtime; the rest, TiVo takes care of.
I didn't realize how much I avoided live TV until the other day, when Mr. MorningGlow was watching the local news, and I found myself staring at these awful things on the tube--loud and obnoxious and disruptive. What're those? Oh...yeah...commercials. I had forgotten what those were.

Gads, no wonder I haven't found it to watch. My brother says it's hysterical, but I never see it when I scan my schedule.
