Question for the lounge. I'm teaching Teen Midlo to drive |
|
and here in the Old Dominion :eyes: they are instructing the kids to use what is called a 'push pull feed' rather than Hand over hand.
Have any of you heard of this? She says that the instructors say it is because you will break your wrist in the event of an accident, but it is a very awkward, jerky way to turn the wheel, IMHO.
Anybody have any idea where I can find some stats on the safety of this? I've been googling, lexis nexising and coming up empty.

5. Uh...I have no clue what that even means, except like Matcom... |
|
I think it sounds like something dirty. However, unlike Matcom, I'm not a perv for teen girls.

9. I think that only applies to gay men. |

Lesbians are merely trying to convert women to lesbianism and witchcraft.

You sort of push and pull the wheel in your hands rather than hand over hand.
Apparently, it's what is being taught these days. It's really shitty.

11. Hmm...that's probably the driving method my mom uses. |
|
When she's not hitting my car, she's taking the slightest turns practically on two wheels. Honestly, I'm amazed she hasn't flipped her Liberty. She gets really defensive about it, too. She doesn't like it when my stepdad says, "Why don't you let me or Jackie do the driving to CT? We handle the car smoother." This is why I usually drive to CT alone. I'm less likely to die due to my mom's bad driving. Well, that and I won't have to listen to a gay little boy singing along to female R&B singers on his iPod.

10. LOL. I thought about it. |
|
But, she won't pass driver's ed if she uses hand over hand.
I told her that after she passes, I'm teaching her hand over hand before I hand over the keys.

12. They teach us to do that in Britain |
|
The reason they give is not to avoid breaking your hand, but rather because that way you keep both hands on the wheel at all times. The idea being that if a tire blew when cruising at speed, your only hope of holding on to the car is if you have both hands gripping the wheel.
Almost everybody forgets about it as soon as they get their licence, because the hand-over-hand method simply feels more fluid, but you can't pass your test here without it.

13. My daughter is being taught hand over hand, by us and her instructor. |
|
She's done with the classes and on to just driving with us. The push pull thing sounds like what is called "shuffling", which used to be hugely discouraged. :hi:

14. Like billyskank just said, they 'seem' to feel that it is better |
|
but I feel as though she is less in control. It seems to me that there are small moments when she doesn't have her hands on the wheel AND, there is a much higher likelihood of having the wheel 'slide' back.
It looks as though she is 'shuffling'. I'm going to google that and see what I can find. :hi:
