Poll question: REO Speedwagon or Journey?
You must choose a favorite or be forced listen to both for the rest of time.

1. Speedwagon, much less shrieking than Journey.
I actually like "Roll with the Changes."

3. That is one of the few songs
that I KNOW is by REO Speedwagon. Usually when a song by either band is on the radio, I'm not sure who I'm listening to.

8. Remember , "loving, touching, squeezing" = Journey.
That voice, I am cringing now just thinking of it.

These were the songs of my freshman year at University of Florida, Journey and REO, the girls like REO because the songs were drippy romance after they sold out with that "Heard if from a friend" crap, the boys like Journey because neal schonn could really shred, man. But older REO was kinda boogeying midwestern rock much to be preferred over the shrieking of Journey.

28. So Heard it From a Friend is REO?
I thought it was Journey, seriously. This is my problem with these two bands. I like the explanation in your post since I was a little too young at the time.

4. Golden Country REO Speedwagon Lyrics -quite apt today
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 01:16 PM by Rambis
Golden country your face is so red
With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin but your back is still turned
And your freaks are cryin but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand

Mortgage people you crawl to your homes
Your security lies in your bed of white foam
You act concerned but then why turn away
When a lady was raped on your doorstep today
Well your blacks are cryin but your back is still turned
And your freaks are dyin but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand, oh yeah......

(solo)

Golden country your face is so red
With all of your money your poor can be fed
You strut around and you flirt with disaster
Never really carin just what comes after
Well your blacks are dyin but your back is still turned
And your freaks are cryin but your back is still turned
You better stop your hidin or your country will burn
The time has come for you my friend
To all this ugliness we must put an end
Before we leave we must make a stand

32. They became crap in the '80s
when producers got their claws into them. In the '70s, both were pretty good bands.

18. Early Journey
Pre-Perry. (OK maybe Infinity with Perry.) After Infinity, Journey just kept releasing the same album with different lyrics. Speedwagon went from pedestrian to non-ambulatory.

We used to know Gary and Kevin. A couple of tools.

25. 'Infinity' was Journey's last good album
It had some clues as to the direction the band was about to go, though — "Anytime" was a good tune, but it was the first of a torturingly long list of power ballads. The pre-Perry "Look Into the Future" still had some undertones of their Santana roots, when they didn't write songs for Perry's voice.

REO Speedwagon had some good tunes — "Roll With the Changes," "Ridin' the Storm Out," "Golden Country," "Sophisticated Lady" — but that was spread over 10 years; I can't think of one good album they did. They always reminded me of a garage band that got a break, rather like Grand Funk. The band's only really good element was keyboardist Neal Doughty; the rest of 'em were hacks. (Gary Richrath was one of the lamest lead guitarists ever.)

Both bands were killed by producers.

37. Journey, by far. Far more sophisticated and far less cheesy.
Journey is far from being the best rock band, but the general higher quality of their songs--and, quite frankly, the fact that they were not the ones who wrote the horrific "Can't Stop Loving You"--makes them far more bearable, in my book.

38. Journey
Reo Speedwagon aren't as bad as their reputation, but even I, a defender of numerous hated bands of the seventies from Uriah Heep to Styx, don't feel all that passionate about most of their music. It's not that it's bad, either; it's just not stuff I get very enthusiastic about. Journey released some cheesy stuff but, at the same time, I think many people embrace them today for this fact. Their weird proggy early years are pretty interesting, and they released some awesome singles once they became a more "Top 40" band. They just don't make cheesily delicious power ballads like "Don't Stop Believin'" these days. (Actually, they could be, but I doubt it...)

39. Believe it or not, I'll listen to both without vomiting
Sure, their music was anything but earth-shattering, but I'd rather have anyone of those bands instead of what passes for "rock" nowadays. You can't tell the difference between REO and Journey? There's even less of a difference amongst the bands played on my local "active rock" station.

Vocal-wise, though, Steve Perry's the better singer over Kevin Cronin. I'll admit a real guilty pleasure for "Can't Fight This Feeling", however.

I actively HATE a whole bunch of Journey songs ("Can't Fight This Feeling", and didn't they do "Open Arms"? AARGH!) so I have to go with REO.
