4. Why why why did you have to ask this question?
Why why why did I have to look at this list? http://www.musicoutfitters.com/topsongs/1984.htm
The ten songs or so off of there that I like, I really like a lot, but the rest-- let's just say that if I didn't dislike the shiver and barf smilies so much, this would be the place for them. So before I go out to shoot myself to quiet the earworms, I'll go with Carob Bean Queen (yes, I know how it's really spelled:)), 'cause it's so unhip to like it.

29. Eurythmics "Sex Crimes" (1984)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtjocHFpncw

Okay, it's from the soundtrack of that terrible movie, "1984". But my real favorite is from that same album, which might have come out in 1984, "Julia". Can't find a recording.

Julia

When the leaves
Turn from green to brown
And autumn shades
Come tumbling down
To leave a carpet on the ground
Where we have laid

When winter leaves her branches bare
And icy breezes chill the air
The freezing snow lies everywhere
My darling
Will we still be there?

Julia

When spring rejoices
Down the lane
And everything is new again
Will everything be
Just the same
Will we be there?

Oh Julia

37. "Beat Street" by Melle Mel
Check out the last verse - it's indicative of what's going on right now:

A newspaper burns in the sand, and the headlines say ‘Man destroys Man!’
Extra! Extra! Read all the bad news on the war for peace that everybody would lose
The rise and fall, the last great empire, the sound of the whole world caught on fire
The ruthless struggle, the desperate gamble
The game that left the whole world in shambles
The cheats, the lies, the alibis
And the foolish attempt to conquer the skies
Lost in space, and what is it worth, huh?
The president just forgot about Earth
Spending multi billions, and maybe even trillions
The cost of weapons ran into zillions
There’s gold in the street, and diamonds under feet
And the children in Africa don’t even eat
Flies on their faces, they’re living like mice
And the houses even make the ghetto look nice, Huh!
The water tastes funny, it’s forever too sunny
And they work all month and don’t make no money
A fight for power, a nuclear shower
And people shout out in the darkest hour
Of sights unseen and voices unheard
And finally the bomb gets the last word
Christians killed Muslims, and Germans killed Jews
And everybody’s bodies are used and abused, Huh!
Minds are poisoned and souls are polluted
Superiority complex is deep rooted
Leeches and lice’s, and people got prices
Egomaniacs control the self-righteous
Nothing is sacred and nothing is pure
So the revelation of death is our cure
Hitler and Caesar, Custer and Reagan
Napoleon, Castro, Mussolini and Begin
Ghengis Khan and the Shah of Iran
Mixed with the blood of the weaker man
The peoples in terror, the leaders made the error
And now they can’t even look in the mirror
‘Cause we gotta suffer while things get rougher
And that’s the reason why we got to get tougher
To learn from the past and work for the future
And don’t be a slave to no computer
‘Cause the Children of Man inherits the land
And the future of the world is in your hands
So just throw your hands in the air
And wave ‘em like you just don’t care
And if you believe that you’re the future
Scream it out and say ‘Oh yeah!’ (‘Oh yeah!’)
‘Oh yeah!’ (‘Oh yeah!’)
Raah!

1984 was a pretty icky year for music. 1981, 82, & 83 were a lot better.

55. it's Chavez, baby!
hey! :hi: how are ya?

If we are going with radio play, I'd have to go with the Smiths, although I prefer What Difference Does It Make to the quintessential sound of How Soon is Now. With Cindy Lauper's She Bop in 2nd place.

However, I love all the songs from REM's Reckoning and Robyn Hitchcock's I Often Dream of Trains. And Talking Heads Burning Down The House also came out that year.

Plus - look at all these goodies! Run DMC - RUN DMC, Knowledge, power, truth and sex / Jam science – SHRIEKBACK, Mirror moves - THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS, Slow to fade - RED GUITARS, Keep moving – MADNESS, Hysteria - HUMAN LEAGUE, How men are - HEAVEN 17, (Who’s afraid of?) The art of noise! - THE ART OF NOISE, If I kissed her, I’d have to kill her first - 400 BLOWS, No motive - 3 TEENS KILL 4, Pop - TONES ON TAILS, Naked prey - NAKED PREY, Gone fishin’ – FLIPPER, In limbo – LYDIA LUNCH, Filth – SWANS, Too tough to die – RAMONES, Gardens – NEW MATH, Dealing with the dead – PLAN 9, Colour appreciation – PLASTICLAND, The longest day - DEL FUEGOS, Frontier days - DEL LORDS, Colored heaven - THE THINGS, Fell from the sun – KENDRA SMITH & DAVE ROBBACK, Painting smiles on a dead man – THE LAST, Blood on the saddle – BLOOD ON THE SADDLE, Cypress - LET’S ACTIVE, Moving – RAINCOATS, In the studio - SPECIAL A.K.A., A walk across the rooftops - BLUE NILE, The Icicle Works – ICICLE WORKS, Splendor of fear – FELT, Jeddah by the sea - 17 PYGMIES, Soul possession – ANNIE ANXIETY, Mr. Heartbreak - LAURIE ANDERSON, George and James – RESIDENTS, Night air – BLAINE L. REININGER, Caribbean sunset – JOHN CALE, New sensations – LOU REED, The love songs - PETER HAMILL, This last night in Sodom – SOFT CELL, Eden – EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL, Rattlesnakes - LLOYD COLE AND THE COMMOTIONS, How will the wolf survive - LOS LOBOS, Kilo – THE NITS, Dreamtime - THE CULT, At the palace - GANG OF 4, Hatful of hollow - THE SMITHS, Exorcising ghosts – JAPAN, Ten bloody marys and ten how’s your fathers - ELVIS COSTELLO AND THE ATTRACTIONS

56. Skin Deep...the Stranglers...not greatest but worth a listen
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 10:19 AM by atomic-fly
I say between U2 In the Name of Love or the Smiths How soon is now

The Stranglers make their debut into mainstream pop.

66. Oceania, 'tis for thee.
Strong and peaceful, wise and brave;
Fighting the fight for the whole world to save.
We the people will ceaselessly strive
To keep our great revolution alive.
Unfurl the banners, look at the screen;
Never before has such glory been seen.

Oceania, Oceania, Oceania, 'tis for thee.
Every deed, every thought 'tis for thee.
Every deed, every thought 'tis for thee.

National anthem of Oceania, which is at war with... um... Eurasia. Wait! Oceania is at war with Eastasia--and always has been! :hide:

70. Whoo--memories!
Dang, I'm old.

Style Council's "My Ever Changing Moods" was a good single, and the album is a classic. I have it loaded on my iPod--that'd be recorded-from-vinyl-tossed-the-worn-out-cassette-transferred-to-CD-uploaded-to-iPod, of course. I like "Paris Match" best, I think. Or "Headstart to Happiness". Great, great stuff.
