One thing I really love about DU
You guys enlighten me.

I've gone along for years thinking I was "liberal" on certain issues, that I had the "right ideas" and whatnot.

Then I read posts by people who've Been There, and I realize I've just been wearing the suit, y'know?

Thanks, y'all.

10. What about the Monty Python sketch with the spanking?
If I remember correctly, it included a narrator going on about seeing the world of unnatural sexual practices on BBC2.

12. The only Python bit with spanking I know of
was at the Castle Anthrax in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."

"And then, the oral sex!"

I thought there might be a mention of spanking in "Today in Parliament," but no.

In the debate, a spokesman accused the goverment of being silly and doing not at all good things. The member accepted this in the spirit of healthy criticism, but denied that he had ever been naughty with a choir boy. Angry shouts of 'What about the Watermelon then?' were ordered then by the speaker to be stricken from the record and put into a brown paper bag in the lavvy. Any further interruptions would be cut up and distributed amongst the poor. For the Government, a front-bench spokesman said the Agricultural Tariff would have to be raised, and he fancied a bit. Futhermore, he argued, this would give a large boost to farmers, him, his friends, and Miss Moist of Knightsbridge. From the back benches there were opposition shouts of 'Postcards for sale' and a healthy cry of 'Who likes a sailor then?' from the minister without portfolio. Replying, the Shadow Minister said he could no longer deny the rumors, but he and the Dachshund were very happy. And in any case he argued Rhubarb was cheap, and what was the harm in a sauna bath?

11. And people like you are what I love about DU
You know, people who can actually recognize that an opinion they've held for years just MIGHT need to be revisited.

I love to pull out everything in my personal mental closet and challenge it from time to time. People like DU'ers make it worth doing.

13. Spot on
I think a big part of being progressive is the willingness to say, "Maybe I need to re-think this," even if it's something you thought you had right.

19. Well, I have learned that I'm not as liberal as some
But I have thought of things differently after reading other's opinions and facts here. Most of my original views are very close to what they were when I found DU.

Although I don't think I ever claimed to be the biggest liberal in the country. There are still opinions I have that aren't going to change because of a liberal pissing contest, but I am always open to new ideas. :)

where I live, the most conservative province in Canada (albeit a liberal city); but I can get medical care without worrying about bills, I can get an abortion - paid for - and not have to endure freaks on the street in front of the clinic hassling me about it, that there are some government services to fall back on should one fall on difficult times through job loss, disability or illness (though they are greatly reduced from, say, 10 years ago), I don't have to listen to fundies running the government (a Bush poodles, yes, but he's got lots of opposition), my gay brothers and sisters can marry legally, we have a free(er) press...
