Got back from my lunch interview a short while ago... |
|
:) Had lunch with the admissions director at the college where I've applied for the Director of Financial Aid position, and then I had a meeting with the search director. The interview was supposed to end by 3 PM, but we ended at 4:45 PM. Things went very well, and they want to bring me back for the all-campus interview on Thursday. That's tentative pending coordination of everyone's schedule, but Thursday's OK with me! :)
Thanks for all the good vibes! :) It might just work out!

:hi: An "all-campus" interview is an all-day thing whereby I meet and interview with many different people on campus. I hadn't heard the term before this, but that's how this particular college refers to it. I'll meet individually with the President, the Vice Presidents, Admissions staff, Financial Aid staff, Dean of Students staff, students, a couple of trustees, the Registrar, Student Accounts staff, and some others (including a few faculty members). Sounds grueling, but I'm actually looking forward to it! :) I know my profession (well, the profession I left to try this current job) extremely well, so I can handle anything that comes my way in an interview. (At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!)
I appreciate your good wishes! :D

:) I've found that lunch meetings/interviews are best handled by eating something that doesn't require picking something up, like a burger or sandwich. The man who met with me got a giant burger, and it was pretty messy. The salad was much easier to handle, and I could take a bite without making a mess.

34. Now that sounds like a rewarding job. |
|
It must be nice to be able to go to work and knowing you'll be able to help some people. Turning people down would suck though.
I do have one financial aid story from my college days.
I was right on the margin to receive financial aid according to their calculations, I'm not sure how they calculated it as I was starving at the time. My financial aid administrator told me probably no aid, but said she'd give me a final answer the next day. I'm devastated and she then suggests going out together that night. I got the hint. Take her out and I get my money. She was older but cute and I was a typical 18 y.o. male, but still I never dreamed a woman would demand sex from a guy in return for something. Long story short, I did what she wanted, got my money, but it was weird.
So, be nice to the college boys!

35. Hmmmm...That's a tactic I've never used... |
|
:yoiks: That's not the way it usually happens. :P If you'd been in my financial aid office, I'd have had you complete an appeal form, and after evaluating it, given you between $1000 and $2000 additional aid depending on your circumstances. Extorting sex out of desperate students isn't on my list of ethical activities. :P I'll bet it was weird. (And as everyone on this board knows, I love sex as much as anyone---but not extortion.)
I've been in the financial aid profession for 20 years, and saying no is the hardest part. However, I come up with creative solutions for most people, and it helps them a lot. My current job is all about profit for the bank, but that's not where my motivations are. I'm much more motivated (as corny as it sounds) by doing something noble and feeling good about what I've done during the day.
I've always been nice to the college boys---within reason. :P
