I never usually post stuff like this, but I really am terrified. My Sophie trusts me. I am crying right now. What if she's not the same cat? What if something dies within her? What if she does not have the life force she's had for the past 3 years? What can I do to comfort her when the operation is over? Will you please help me? I really don't think I can do this alone.

 She'll be fine and live a much longer and healthier life...and how did you last 3 years with Miss Sophie's heat cycles?

2. Thank you so much.
You saved my hide in GD and you're saving it here. LOL- Little Sophie has been a little monster when she was in heat, but I never got anything done about it because she'd go into heat at unpredictable times. I'd heard it was bad to get your cat spayed while in heat so I never did it.

 Catchawave, you're great!

You're too kind. I've been told the same by the vets, it's just that I feel like I'm about to do something awful to her. Thank you so much. It's absolutely silly of me, but I really cannot stop crying.

She'll still love you. Is there any way you could have someone else take her to the vet? That's what we always did.

60. yeah, even my boy isn't pissed at me any more!
I had to get my female spayed because she ended up with pyometrea (sp?) you really are doing the best thing for your cat. My mom has one she has never spayed, and she's like 12 years old now, and she's in a "permanent" heat. Damn cat is always running around yowling, and trying to get laid by the other cats. They have no clue what she's trying to do, lol. Poor kitty.... anyway, don't worry, she'll be a little groggy when you take her home, but she'll forget all about it.

4. I do not know how cat psychology works, but
if you can make her feel distant - e.g. not associating you with the surgery, she will not feel any bad feelings toward you at all. Animals do have a sense of things, as I had learned from my little Zoe...

 Sophie will very probably be fine, and has been said will only live longer and happier because of it.

The more other folks with kitties share their experiences, the less you have to worry about. (and cat psychology is doubtlessly different than bird psychology.)

Spazcat was fine. All my other kitties over the years have been fine, the only one that ever had a problem was a kitten the vet discovered had an abdominal hernia, she just had more of a scar as the whole mess was repaired at the same time as her spay job and it probably saved her life.

You're a good mama to worry though. :)

PS, If you feel bad, remember you're sparing her a lifetime of sexual frustration. Or kittens, which would be even worse.

35. I'd butter her up with some treats tonight
I'm softhearted that way, I have that desire to make up for all the bad things in the world for my kid and for any animals in my care. Tomorrow night when you'll really want to baby her she'll be too out of it to respond well, so tonight if you can give her some extra cuddling (if she puts up with it) and a little bit of something tasty before she has to stop eating pre-surgery you might feel a bit better and you'll be doing her no harm.

8. She will be fine
and overall happier, even if she doesn't fully understand why.

Once she's spayed, she'll stop going into heat, and not doing that will make her personality more even-tempered. (think about her not having to regularly go through cycles where she is thinking, "dang, I really, really REALLY need to get laid...) :D

My two kitties are 18, and they still love me, and think I'm a good Dad. They were spayed before they ever went into heat, so they don't know what they missed, but still...

well, a really long time ago, my Mommy wasn't spayed, but she was married to my Daddy, and one night something happened...

Some time after that my Mommy had to go to the hospital, and I think she got me as a door prize or something.

I'm not sure, I was really young at the time.

Glad I could make you laugh, it is good medicine for heart aches of all types.

and the male bunny is neutered. It hasn't affected any of their personalities. Just think about all the health benefits for Sophie. No chance of kittens. Virtually no chance of certain cancers. You're doing the right thing.

... nowadays it's just a small incision, the cat spends the rest of the day sleeping off the anesthetic, the stiches (usually one or two) come out in about a week and life goes on. Outpatient surgery, really. No sweat!

Just follow your cat's lead when they get home...if they want to snuggle, then snuggle...if they want to go off in a corner and sleep it off (which is what my cats did) then just let them.

39. You're doing the right thing for your pretty baby.
My cat is 15, and she was spayed when I adopted her (or she adopted me), which was almost 12 years ago.

However, I recently had to take her to have a teeth cleaning. The vet wanted me to bring her in the night before so they could put her on fluids because she's got some renal dysfunction. So I brought her in the night before, gave her a hug, and had the vet tech take her back. When I went to pick her up the next day, she was pretty woozy and feeling crummy, but the vet said she came through really well. By the next day, she was feeling better, and it didn't take long before she was her usual affectionate self.

I've also had to have her on antibiotics, and she's affectionate a few hours after her dose. I sense she's thinking something like, okay, she does this mean thing to me, but she feeds me and she lets me crawl all over her at night and gives me pats and has someone who comes over who really likes me and gives me the food I like, too, and he's even better for walking on because he doesn't move around as much as mommy does.

Your Sophela will be fine, I'm sure.

these things go off without a hitch all the time... she is not going to hold a grudge at all.
if you have any complications from stitch picking- some cats, including my caindy (that's her below) are so obsessed with picking at things, i had a feeling she'd try and rip the stitches. just know, they can give you that cone head/ queen elizabeth collar at the vet if you're concerned, but you can also make your own softer, easier to sleep in one with a mouse pad. and then sophie will know that momma really cares and is smarter than mcgyver. you're going to bond plenty in the next few days.

52. warning rant
3 to 4 million cats and dogs are euthanized each year. Spaying and neutering is one of the major ways to cut down on this number. I have four foster kittens right now, so my rescue group has had to turn down 4 or 5 people who called looking for someone to take in kittens, because they where not responsible enough to get their pet fixed. These kittens will most likely end up at the pound and become some of the 3 or 4 million.

Also spaying and neutering can help lower the risk of some cancers.

I'm not saying this to make you feel bad. You kept you cat inside when she was in heat and she did not have kittens. I just feel very strongly about this issue and wanted to get the word out.

O.K. rant done.

Mickey, but I think techniques have improved in the last 35 years, so maybe her recovery will be quicker.

Edited on Sun Oct-29-06 11:51 PM by mike_c
Seriously. She really will. I'm the neighborhood crazy cat guy-- I live alone with a bunch of cats, and I like most cats more than most people. I lose sleep at night thinking about cats suffering. I'm telling you this so you'll understand that I'm not giving you advice lightly-- Sophie will be very happy after you spay her. She'll be an excellent companion for you and she'll likely bond with you even more strongly. You are absolutely doing the best thing for her. Estrus and kitten bearing are very hard on female cats. She will live longer and be healthier after she is spayed.

62. she'll be juuuuust fine. And healthier and happier, too
she'll need to be babied for a bit when you bring her home, and she might be tired and woozy for the rest of the day - so DO NOT WORRY. She'll just need to sleep and moving/jumping onto high objects might cause her a little discomfort at first. Make sure her bed is low to the ground, and her food and litterbox are nearby.

She might even have dissolving stitches, in which case you won't need to take her back to the vet for stitch removal.

Cats have abso-fricking-lutely amazing recuperative powers - her little tummy will be knitting itself back together in no time.

I have had 20+ cats in my life, currently have 7 (2 boys, 5 girls) and all have been neutered/spayed. The girls needed to sleep the rest of the day, but were back to their normal boisterous selves in no time. MommaKitty (who brought us three of the girls we currently have, and who lives with us, too) had obviously been in heat at least once, and the surgery was no problem at all.

Don't worry, Sugar Smack. Sophie will be fine. Let us know how she is when you bring her home, OK?

the WORST that will happen is she will get to be a little pudge an want to be attented at all times, 'specially when you're asleep and you find you have to fight her even MORE for bed space.

66. You sound like me!
I went through that before getting Amber fixed. The vet even giggled at how scared I was, and I made her call me as soon as she was out of surgery to be sure she was okay (I had to leave her and go to work).

I was worried she'd be different, that she'd be angry. I have a deep discomfort with the idea that we can just chop our pets up how we see fit to make our lives better. Declawing, fixing, removing the thing that lets a dog bark, bobbing tails and ears... I'm just not comfortable with it.

But I had Amber fixed, anyway, and she's fine. Still trusts me, still has the temprament you'd expect from a wild cat with a playful streak. I've tried in the past not fixing animals. I wound up one time with a dog who gave birth to two puppies. I thought, this isn't so bad, now we have three cute little female dogs. In about a year, both puppies went into heat at the same time as their mother. I locked them up in the garage, and several dogs ripped our door apart getting in. In the end, we wound up with 24 puppies to give away. After that, I had them fixed.

I'm not comfortable with it, still, but the alternative is a mess.

68. Jobycom, you're sweet to hold my hand. Thank you.
The ONLY thing besides her annual shots I'm doing, and other upkeep of course, is getting her fixed. My best friend and the vets urged me to do it and I did not want little Sophie to continue to suffer. I would never ever get her de-clawed, my couches & chairs be damned. It's only stuff.

69. Ok, let's go the other way
What if you don't spay her and she ends up with litters of kittens that you can't care for and can't give away? What if she never breeds but ends up in perpetual heat with the attendant noise and behaviors? What if you don't spay her and she ends up with mammary cancer that takes her life long before she should leave you? (And that IS a very serious concern.)

She'll be fine. She'll be more herself than she's ever been because the overproduction of hormones won't be controlling her personality.

Seriously, you should have had her fixed earlier. It's not right to let her suffer through heat when you know you're not breeding her. She may be grumpy for a day or 2 but afterwards she will love you to death!

76. spaying your cat is the right thing to do
she will be fine. My two kittens came spayed and neutered from the shelter. Lied animal shelter here in Vegas does not mess around. They sterilize these animals when they are just a couple of months old and I am glad they do that. That way someone doesn't have to have the worry of getting the cat back in to get them fixed.

I got Sophie from a coworker. It was after a breakup with a boyfriend, and I'd already been looking into getting a cat.

She said: "Do you need a kitten?"
I said: "You know, I do need one" so I got her at 8 weeks.

89. Trust me, she will be the same cat, minus
going into heat. She'll love you just the same. She'll play just the same. Any personality traits she had before, will be there too. If she's like my cats, her sarcasm and sense of humor will become even more noticeable, but that's a fun thing.

They have a few days where you have to put betadine on the stithes. Trust me, that doesn't hurt. I know because I used the same thing on mine. The worst part will be the first day or two. They always come home looking like they've been through the ringer, but she should do fine.

Good luck to your little Sophie and to you. Take a valium already, worried mommy.

99. Good thing she has the dissolving stitches.
Cats are like me. They REALLY don't like to have stitches removed. I'm calmer when I am getting stitches than I am when they remove them. Ouch, ou, ou, ou, ou, ou. :woohoo:

I was able to calm you because I am the same way when my babies have to stay at the vet for surgery or anything. I freak then too. I've discovered that most of the time, assuming the cat isn't desperately sick or old, they'll actually be ok. If they are older or sick though, I worry a lot then.

My aunt and I drove to Sunday Girl's vet's office the night he kept her after she was spayed. We camped out in the car for a few hours. He came up and asked us what was up. We didn't have the sense to make up something. We actually told him we missed her and wanted to be "close" to her. He laughed at us and told us it was his night to stay with the animals in the recovery room. Apparently, either he or one of the other doctors stays with the animals just out of surgery, usually accompanined by someone else who works there. He pointed out that the car of the helper was still there from when they closed earlier and that she wasn't alone and wasn't going to be alone. He said he knew I had to work the next morning and that we should go home and get some sleep. That was back when I used to work for the dog groomer and he knew I worked there. We looked at him sheepishly and did what he told us to do.

Sunday Girl came home as opinionated as ever. She still grins. She still likes to torture crickets. She pulls one of their legs off if I don't get to it and take it outside first. She pulls one of the legs off and grins while she watches it walk around in circles. Apparently, that is how a one legged cricket walks. She still likes to rub the side of her face on the litter box while Yogi is inside. She grins and waits. He comes out in slow motion. He knows if he comes out at normal speed, she'd gonna tattoo him with her claws and he knows if he tries to make a run for it, she's gonna chase him and tattoo him with her claws. He comes out slow and misses her radar somewhat.

A fly got in the house yesterday. Yogi saw the fly. What happened was my aunt pointed the fly out to me. It was on a box under the bar in the kitchen. Well, Yogi stays glued to me, so he followed me over there. He saw something fly by and got a closer look. It took him about 2 seconds to realize it was a fly. He took off running...the other way...all the way into my bedroom. He's scared of flies. *shakes head* My cat is afraid of a fly.

So, when it comes to the babies, I know about the anxiety and how it feels. Plus I thought I'd share that cute story about Yogi.

 Most likely, your baby will do just fine. A few days to heal...that's something I have always found really interesting about animals. They heal way faster than humans. No one has ever been able to explain to me how that is. Anyhow, a few days to heal and your baby should do just fine.
