Let Us Now Praise Albert Collins
The Iceman. The Master of the Telecaster. A blistering, soulful guitarist and brilliant performer.

Although he is no longer with us... it has been nearly 13 years now - he will always be one of my very favorite blues artists. His wry humor, his piercing solos, his consummate showmanship... the unique tuning and complete control he had without using a pick... the ice cold sound of Albert Collins was one of a kind!

1. Albert is one of my all-time favorites.
I'll have to dig out my copy of Cold Snap (his best, imo), and listen to it now.

2. Yes, "Cold Snap" is my go-to.
With Jimmy McGriff on organ, it has the best band he ever assembled, and his arrangements are in peak form. "Too many dirty dishes..." :smoke:

3. "Brick" was may favorite off of that album...
...a great song that showcases both Albert's humor and guitar playing, but then again the entire album does that. Albert's not getting enough love in this thread, so here are some links so that those not familiar with him can enjoy his music.

5. Yeah, I just realized that after I posted.
Unfortunately, I think my copy of "Frostbite" is vinyl, so I couldn't listen to it even if I could find it. :(

6. If you have enough vinyl
Get a turntable. I still have nearly 100 of my old LP's, and I love getting nostalgic with vinyl - and they still sound good!

7. Phil's brother?
well sue-sue-suedio!

I will praise Michael Collins, even if that is only a pseu-pseu-pseudonym. I love Dan Fortune, the one-armed Marxist detective. Check him out, if you like mysteries.

13. I agree completely
since the grinning monkey is pointing at the FSM.

Since we are in agreement, it is apparently just another day for you and me in paradise. Harmony on DU, tell me that isn't against all odds. It's like a new beginning, a Genesis of sorts.

11. I'll have to check it out.
Here's my current favorite blues album:

"Hot Sauce" is the most one of the most amazing blues guitar instrumentals you'll ever hear.

12. Luther was the first blues concert I ever went to ...
and I was about 16, and I think it was 1968.

Playing to a college crowd, he had them all on their feet for the last half of the concert. When he was brought back for encores, he and the band did some amazing R&B covers, like "Knock on Wood" and "Who's Making Love", which turned me into an instant R&B fan.

10. I first heard him on the "Showdown" album with Copeland and Cray
A great album, by the way.

I love that stinging sound of Albert's guitar, one of my very favorite blues guitarists.

I also saw a video of a live concert he gave in Montreal that was just amazing, with him walking through the audience playing and playing and playing.

14. I LOVE 'Showdown!'
I met Robert Cray when he was promoting 'Strong Persuader', and he autographed 'Showdown!' for me. But I never got to meet Albert or Johnny Copeland, another brilliant guitarist.

The first time I saw Collins play in any context was on David Letterman back in the NBC days. He did that walk-through of the audience and brought the house down. :D
