1. They certainly are
The shell of an almond is the same structure as a peach or cherry pit. There is a thin green fleshy skin on an almond shell that is the same structure as the fruity part of peaches.

What did I learn today?

The Billings Gazette (essentially Montana's NYT) endorsed Jon Tester this morning!

30. Au contraire
Both Sumac and Poison Ivy are part of the Cashew family, as are cashews, and mangos. Some people who are highly allergic to poison ivy, like myself, can get a rash from eating cashews or mangos. You find these things out the hard way, btw.

"Scientific Classification. Poison ivy, poison oak, and poison sumac belong to the cashew family, Anacardiaceae. Poison ivy is classified as Rhus radicans or Toxicondendron radicans. Poison oak is R. diversiloba or T. diversilobum and poison sumac is R. vernix or T. vernix."

Although, oddly, coconuts are not included.

25. yup, if you're allergic to one of them
you're likely allergic to the other two.

It's the sticky sap on the rind of the mango that carries the allergen.

I nearly killed a good friend by feeding her a mango butter cream cake, not knowing she was allergic to poison sumac. She ended up in the hospital with a head to toe rash, including the inside of her ears.

Even after I told her, she never blamed me, bless her soul.

24. I learned there's a pretty park about two miles from my home.
Got lost on a back road, and voila! Like your fun fact, it was a completely accidental, yet delightful, discovery.

Oh, wait. I also learned that almonds and peaches are related to each other. :hi:

34. That the apartments I'm moving to are only about four miles from my
old ones, but because of several canyons here in Austin, the shortest route to actually get to them is about nine miles. At one point, there are two cul-de-sacs that touch, back to back, so that the roads are about two feet apart, but the city has put a wooden fence and between the two roads.

36. Both observations seem correct.
But a lot of the canyon land is a preserve, and some of it could only be traversed by a bridge. And the blocked cul-de-sacs are probably a way to cut down on traffic through otherwise quiet neighborhoods.

Still, they could at least put a gate or walkway...
