The fire started around 2pm yesterday during school hours in a second floor chemistry classroom. Over 1000 students and 100 plus faculty were in the school when the fire broke out.
None of the students and faculty were injured. Everyone was evacuated safely. Thanks goodness for that ...
Some students are going to counseling because they are in shock. I just got home from work and my mom told me her co-worker's daughter can not sleep at all thinking about it. The school was over 30 years old and it has to be rebuild - there was nothing the firefighters could do. I think some firefighters were injured trying to put out the blaze but they are ok. I did not graduate from this high school but I think about all the transcripts, archives , band instruments that were destroyed. But that is minor, I am just glad that no one died because I would have been sick... There will be no school the rest of the year the students will have to be sent to other schools - senior years will be disrupted for many. And some students are indeed happy, well they are kids. But others are worried about how this will affect their chances of getting into college. I think this puts into the question how prepared are all of our schools with fire safety - and how much attention do they pay to having fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems. This is so important. These are our kids.
