I keep my intake to one or two glasses a week. Of all the ways to die, the slow extermination of brain cells is not one of them.

Dad says so. He's been there 15 times. And he taught Icelandic for 10 years. And he stuck his finger in the soil only an inch and actually felt the lava.

Welcome, ILA!!!!!!!:toast:

More than any other, I want to visit Iceland. Unfortunately, the finances aren't available to make this possible at the moment, but in the meantime, it's fun enough to browse through photographs. The landscape is insane.

Thanks for the welcome.

42. Iceland is a country that fascinates me on a variety of levels.
Edited on Sat Nov-04-06 07:33 PM by ILA
The music. Sigur Rós, múm, Björk ... it's unique, it's beautiful, it stands out. And from a country of a very small population? One of the reasons why Iceland is a country punching above its weight.

The literature. It's a shame I've never had the opportunity to read the legendary sagas or the works of Halldór Laxness in their original Icelandic.

And of course, the landscape. When people say that some of the landscape is that of another planet, I can see what they mean.

It would be a dream to visit the country, but my far-out thoughts extend to the possibility of living there one day. It's become an obsession, lately I've been looking at photos of Reykjavik, photos of apartments, so on, imagining myself in that place. I enjoy writing, so I went to the official website of the publication "The Reykjavik Grapevine". It's very far away (geographically and time frame), but who knows.

btw, my first memories of Iceland was looking inside the atlas as a child, horribly butchering the pronounciation of Reykjavik. hehe

Iceland, Icelanders - in the past, sometimes it would frustrate me how people were unaware of certain parts that make up this country, although now I don't mind so much. The obscurity is part of the attraction, for me.

Found this just before:

I love this story, because it shows the powerful effect that role models have: Vigdís Finnbogaadóttir, a woman, was elected president of Iceland for four consecutive terms (sixteen years). After a couple terms in office, she found that young boys would ask her if they too could become president; they had only ever seen a woman in office! (Source: Houston Chronicle)
