Place scares the crap out of me. Everytime I respond to a post or start one, I hold my breath like I'm waiting for pap test results (which I never study for, BTW)

I don't take their crap and either resort to mocking, ridicule, or pointed attacks at their inability to have a conversation like a civilized person.

If that doesn't work, the ignore feature does. Though, I have to say, there have been times when I've ignored a person and gone back later, un ignored them and read the posts they put up while under ignore.

That, and no one stays on ignore with me for more than a day or so (I usually don't get that intimately involved in GD - its not a place to make friends or enemies).

Moderation helps too. Not in the admin sense but in the "don't go in there too often" sense.

I've been flamed as anti-Catholic, anti-Irish, anti-Hispanic, homophobic, DLC, corporatist, Centrist tool, troll, freeper, not to mention "comprehension impaired" and "reading impaired"-----all this about somebody who has voted for every local and national Dem of ALL stripes from the noble-idealists (McGOVERN) to the "baby killer" (LBJ, who accomplished MANY of the great Dem domestic programs) and everybody in between. Just for the record, none of those names I've been called are true. Just thought I'd add that. Lately, it's the CASTRO-CHAVEZ lovers who give me this "Look":
