Worst song ever?
Still "I've Never Been to Me" according to me. And you?

This is a test of the Lounge Negativism Network. I'm posting 'Best Song Ever?' simultaneously; we'll see which one gets the most replies/views.

59. which version - Paperlace or Bo Donaldson
We used to love that song. We were singing it outloud in Glacier National Park hoping to scare away bears by making alot of noise. I guess a Dolphin costume would do the same thing.

98. My music teacher in elementary school
played that for us, that and "One Tin Soldier" maybe we sang along or whatnot, I forget.

This was in '73/74. Bless her intentions, but I was more interested in The Sweet and "Ballroom Blitz" Which she didn't let me play on another occasion when we shared our musical tastes. LOL!

61. That came on the jukebox after the gig Saturday night...
I commented on its stupidity to our bass player (a well-traveled veteran musician who has been doing the band thing for decades). He dryly quipped, "I quit. If that's what it takes to make it in the music business, I'm done." We had a good chuckle over that.

Every time I think modern pop has gotten as stupid as it possibly can get, someone invariably lowers the bar. It's insane...

63. They weren't dissing trumpets
It's an illumination of the POV of the drunk lads in the back of the bar "dressed in their brown baggies and their platform soles". "They don't give a damn about any trumpet-playing band / It ain't what they call Rock and Roll"

The song is sympathetic to the plight of an old-school jazz band trying to eke out a living in a world that oftener than not ignores that genre.

You might want to listen more closely to the song. It's actually a fantastic tune, and Knopfler's Stratocaster work on the solo is brilliant.

Edited on Sun Nov-05-06 09:11 PM by bluedogyellowdog
at best, but hardly a list of the worst songs ever. But then, if VH1 had picked what are generally agreed as the worst songs ever it would have been too obvious. Methinks they made this list with establishing hip credentials in mind. I mean come on, "Broken Wings"? "Everybody Have Fun Tonight"? Seems like it's trendy right now to dis some of the more typical 80s pop groups like Wang Chung and Mr. Mister. :eyes:

But I agree with a few. I absolutely LOATHE "Hangin' Tough" and "Don't Worry, Be Happy".

Some of that list is great!
As I'm an AOR/Melodic Rock fan, I have to say I like Don Johnson's "Heartbeat", Mr Mister, Bryan Adams, Chicago, Europe, Huey Lewis, Starship (not that one particularly), and although he went down the pan in the 90's, Michael Bolton's 1985 album, "Everybody's Crazy" is an AOR masterpiece! (although the song mentioned isn't on that album)

Yet another Prince pseudonym surfaces...I could tell when it came out Prince wrote it. It's got his signatures all over it (not to mention his penchant for bad spelling.) All that aside, Prince is a normally good writer and a hell of a guitar player...

It was actually a hit in the mid-80s, but had a resurgence of popularity after the first Gulf War and again after Sept 11, 2001.

I was a country radio DJ and music director in the early to mid 90s, and we got way too many requests for that song.

38. Take the Money and Run by Steve Miller Band
worst.lyrics.ever

Steve Miller Band - Take The Money And Run
This is a story about Billy Joe and Bobbie Sue
Two young lovers with nothing better to do
Than sit around the house, get high, and watch the tube
And here is what happened when they decided to cut loose

They headed down to, oh, old El Paso
That's where they ran into a great big hassle
Billy Joe shot a man while robbing his castle
Bobbie Sue took the money and run

Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run

Billy Mack is a detective down in Texas
You know he knows just exactly what the facts is
He ain't gonna let those two escape justice
He makes his living off of the people's taxes

Bobbie Sue, whoa, whoa, she slipped away
Billy Joe caught up to her the very next day
They got the money, hey
You know they got away
They headed down south and they're still running today
Singing go on take the money and run

Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run
Go on take the money and run

48. "What I Am" by Edie Brickell
Of all the songs I hate and don't want to listen to, that one tops the list, head and shoulders above the rest in the Kingdom of Worst, and has the dubious honor of being the only song in existence that I absolutely can't tolerate listening to for even one horrible note.

Other awful songs:

Freebird
Close My Eyes Forever (Ozzy Osbourne & Lita Ford)
Honey (please don't hit me, MrsG!)

I'm pretty much "M'eh" over it, but my wife hates that song. And i can live with putting your other three on my Worst 20 list.

75. AND IIIIIIIIIIIII-Y-IIIIIIII . .WILL ALWAYS LOVE YOUUUUUUUUUU
Whitney Houston.

14 WEEKS this bathtub shitter of a song sat atop the charts, air-raiding and stomping the pulp out of every ostentatious syllable. Whitney's last disgusting leap into diva-dom before she would forever be a cultural embarassment as Mrs. Bobby Brown. GOD that song is teh suck!!11!1

78. Just the Whitney performance. The song, as originally done by Dolly, is rather nice
But Whitney's screamfest-- oh. my. god. I had to quit watching HBO for a year because of the neverending promos for The Bodyguard featuring guess which song in each and every promo.

82. if i may be self-serving...
...my band is independently releasing an album with a song i wrote and sang that's actually called "worst song ever". there's an early mix of it available on our myspace site but i don't know what the etiquette is on advertising your own stuff like that so that's all i'll say.

hopefully my song isn't actually the worst song ever, although i suppose any publicity is good publicity.

83. Advertise the living hell out of it
The etiquette is "don't spam the board" (ie, don't start 20 threads saying "I have a new song; go listen to it!") but if you just post about it and provide the link, nobody's going to complain. You may want to wait until some days after Election Day, however.:)

106. I have the same reaction to that song!
I actually start feeling nasueous when I hear it. I don't know what it is, but the feeling is somewhat like riding in the back seat of a car that is driving on a sharply winding road, it's rainy and humid and you just feel like you have to crack open the window or you're going to yack. :puke:

Thankfully you don't hear them much now because most DJ's hate them too. A more recent song that I despise is Big Yellow Taxi. I have no idea why this song is remade so often.
