51 Dems + 49 Repubs = 100 senators, so that's the whole Senate, right?
But what about the independents? From what I hear, Lieberman is comfortably beating Lamont, and he isn't a Dem. And what happened to Jim Jeffords?

11. Lieberman will caucus with the Democrats, so he's counted as such there |
|
and Jim Jeffords isn't running for re-election; his seat is, by all indications, going to be won by Bernie Sanders (who is an independent, and defines himself as a democratic socialist)...Sanders will also caucus with the Democrats in the Senate, so the result would be effective Democratic control.

13. That all seems really strange to this Brit |
|
Politics here is extremely tribal. If a candidate lost their party's nomination (we call it "selection" here) there is no way in hell anybody from their party would campaign for them, or indeed have any association with them at all.
It seems amazing to me that Lieberman can just thumb his nose at the Democratic voters, and the rest of the establishment couldn't give a shit.

15. Yeah, it OUGHT to be that way here... |
|
but due to the way our party system is set up, it's often more about the candidate than it is the party (certainly the case with Lieberman; he thinks he should be the senator from Connecticut no matter what the Democratic voters think). Personally I think that the US would be a good deal better off with a parliamentary system rather than the presidential system we have now; it'd put a stop to the sort of nonsense Lieberman's engaging in, for one thing, and it'd probably lead to greater party solidarity and coordination (at least on the part of the Democrats, who seem to've become increasingly fractured in recent decades) for another.

I was up there a few weeks ago and saw the funniest political ad ever. It was the independent guy running for... Governor(? I think). The cartoon one with everyone sticking their heads up their asses. I really wish I had caught the whole thing but I only saw it once and was laughing so hard I missed most of it.

Not a great turnout, but then again, I live in a Republican ward. (Maybe that'll change today). As I was walking through the mess of people holding up signs, I remarked to a person holding a Dem sign "Today is gonna be a good day". The guy next to him, holding a Repub sign, said "Yes, it is". I replied "For Dems". He said "Maybe not". The witty repartee ended there and I went in to vote. The poll worker handed me my ballot with a big smile and said, "Same type of ballot. Nothing's changed". (No Diebold) I wonder if I can hold my breath till tonight.
