Hey peeps. It's been a bad night, keep me company
I just got back about two hours early from the big college pub night, wherein I wasted over 90 minutes of time and $7.25 to basically be ignored. So, not liking the atmosphere and seeing as how nobody had more than 20 seconds to spare for me (not least of which the two girls I had gone there to hit on), I cut my losses and came home.

So, what's going on in here? I only had one drink over at the bar... who's pouring and who's lookin' good?

6. It's quiet here too!
We are having some warm weather, which isn't unusual this time of year...

And we are rejoicing over the election of Debra Bowen as our new Secretary of State!

She will make damn sure that our votes will be processed and counted fairly!

:woohoo: :woohoo:

8. Good for you! We're pumped about Gov. Ritter
I am especially, since he's the first candidate I ever got to vote for. Our new Sec. of State is, sadly, a Republican, but at least he seems like a good one. I haven't heard anyone set off alarm bells about him, which is nice because our current SoS is a total Republican hack who had one of her rulings reversed by a court.

4. Right now I'm in school at the U. of Toronto
Which is why I can get legal booze, which is nice... but as you pointed out it's pretty expensive. I mean, here I am trying to get an education when I should just start a bar. I don't see how that's a losing proposition, do you?

7. i have often thought of starting a bar
but my town is so damn saturated with them it'd be tough to get it off the ground. however, if you can find a good market it would be a damn good proposition.

14. Too dangerous. I think that might make peoples' heads explode.
Two of my best friends, who get along well in every other respect, are on opposite sides of the "Wars" v. "Trek" schism. They almost can't broach the subject.

15. Maybe they should come together and make "Star Trek Wars"
See the death star blow up the enterprise, but not before Kirk and crew teleport to the death star. Then when Obi-Wan is killed Kirk picks up his light saber and fights vader.

16. Here's what my friends have explained to me
Or at least what I understand from it...

Star Trek presents a highly organized universe wherein most players follow the rules, and those who don't are ostracized and contained. Star Wars, OTOH, despite the presence of the Empire at some points, is rather anarchic and not really bound by one code or another.

I don't think Han Solo and Captain Piccard would get along too well. I usually subvert the dominant paradigm in these conversations by asking my physics-loving friend if he's made me a lightsaber yet. He promises me that "we're working on it". No results though... I'm kind of disappointed in that.

17. Seems pretty accurate
plus, star trek seemed to embody a ton of stories, whereas star wars was more focused on one particular one (ie, with Star Trek you had lots of episodes to choose from and themes).

The most fervent opposition to Reagan's "Star Wars" project came from Star Trek fans.

20. Hie your ass to a dance class tommorow night.
Here: http://tinyurl.com/ybdenz nice guy that I am I looked it up for you. Tomorrow night there is a Bachatta class (looks like sex standing up, beginners start at teasing foreplay). Arrive sober.

Guaranteend there will be more females than males there and the ladies will be glad to see you. You will meet (ok, dance with) a bunch of them during the lesson.

Bars suck, too loud and the girl you bring home if you're lucky may well be already attatched, too drunk to play or coyote ugly. Dance classes good; free trial of all merchandise before bid for lease. Ladies are always glad to see an extra guy even if you're ugly and clumsy as I am. (you're not)

Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 02:05 AM by rockymountaindem
Umm... I don't know quite how to put this, but I'm rather averse to dancing in any context. Thanks for thinking of me though, I appreciate it. I don't know what it is, but whenever someone gets me to dance (which hasn't happened in a while) I just get this feeling like I'm doing something inherently wrong. I can't overcome it. Oh well...

Edit: Now I'm *really* going to bed. I have to hit the gym in the morning. See you on the flip side.

23. Try again. Pretty ladies take hold of you and smile............
even when you screw up. You are expected to screw up; if you don't screw up regularly you aren't learning. Also they don't get to excercise their fantasies until there is a guy to lead them.

I'm balding, fat, homely and over 40. College girls with tight bodies smile and say nice things to me because I'm willing to attempt to lead in a dance class. You could not do worse.

24. Wow, that's pretty much the story of my college life.
I either get unwanted attention from creepy people who won't leave me alone or utterly ignored by people I'd like to hang out with. There seems to be no happy medium.

Sigh. I feel your pain. That's why I pretty much go out with the same small group of friends every night. At least I know they're okay with my weirdness :)

25. I wouldn't say that's normally the case
But it sometimes is and it definately was last night. Speaking of creepy people there's always this random friend of a friend who shows up places, then proceeds to get drunk and become very annoying towards me. On Haloween she tried to grab my Russian fur hat off my head. That hat is one of my prize possessions. Don't mess with the fuckin' hat, ok?

Anyway, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The people I was out with weren't my regular crew, but people I've met more recently. I guess they have higher priorities.

29. Yeah, I mean its not like that when I hang with actual friends
But if I try to mingle with people I don't yet know very well, awkwardness ALWAYS ensues.

I used to have this one creepy stalker who, every time he saw me, invited himself to join my conversation/sit next to me. He didn't drink, either, so it was just pure weirdness. He graduated, thank God.

27. Improve your love life by staying out of bars
If you have the gift of attracting the opposite sex simply by existing and especially if you're mostly looking for a one-night stand, then bars evidently work well.

However, if you're not instantly attractive to the opposite sex, then bars and other "zoo" type gatherings are an exercise in confusion and frustration. When I was in the age group that frequents such gatherings, I was always so overwhelmed by the noise and crowds and semi-darkness that I could barely function. They were always extremely depressing occasions.

I met all of my gentleman friends in quieter, less frenzied surroundings, such as small parties given by friends, extra-curricular activities, and classes that had discussion sections.

So my advice, rockymountaindem, if it's love you're looking for, forget the bars and mixers and take another look at the women in your classes and extra-curricular activities. Especially take a look at the women all the other men are ignorning. Casually invite them for coffee or a study date. No pressure.

28. True...
I've noticed that when I'm in any loud situation, I get very... focused on the noise. I've always hated prolonged loud noise ever since I had to leave the room whenever my mom vacuumed as a kid. Sometimes these things get really loud, sometimes they don't.

As for your advice, people don't have parties around here very often because we all just go out (like last night), and meeting people in class is damn near impossible. I have no discussion sessions this year. Everybody shows up 2 minutes before class starts and leaves immediately afterwards, so it's hard to strike up a conversation with anybody. Plus, my school promotes competition between students with its grading system, so helping other people study is just a bad idea and we generally don't do it. It's kind of a wierd scene in that regard. Nobody studies in groups. Everybody retires to the library and jealously guards their notes.

30. That still leaves extra-curricular activities
I don't know what your particular interests are, but if you join something that's musical or literary, you may be one of the few straight men there. And you don't have to be an actor to help out in the theater department, since they're always looking for people to build sets and run the light and sound boards.
