My uncle, whose son has Down's Syndrome sent me this link. It makes me want to be a better person. The story is only a portion of the impact, watch the video. Be ready to be inspired and humbled.

The big question I have is, why is this the first time I have seen/heard of this? I know Britney is getting a divorce, I know Bill Cosby settled a sex suit of some sort, and I know Justin Timberlake apparently brought sexy back- but I didn't know about this amazing father and son. Pitiful what we pay attention to in the world these days.

(and thanks for the love on Monday friends- you know who you are- it helped a lot. I feel much better today. Tuesday and Wed. helped too, of course!)

edit: SUNK, not SUCK- sucked would have worked, but not suck...

2. Thanks for sharing that link & story.
I love families who REFUSE to look at a child and see a disability. I love that they didn't tell their son No, but made a dream happen.

LOVE IT LOVE IT LOVE IT!!!!

If i weren't traveling tomorrow, I'd spend all day kicking my own post. I want to make little bits of paper with this site on it and hand it out at the airport. People might think I'm a little crazy though...

25. Okay, you've inspired me.
Tomorrow is the local Mid-Bay Bridge run (4.5 miles) that my daughter wants to run with me. I wasn't going to go because frankly, she'll push me to my max which I wasn't looking forward to, but damn, if he can push his son, then I can run next to my perfectly healthy daughter.

30. Oh boy, the tears are coming fast and steady.
You see my son, who is now 22, has developmental disabilities also.
He has learning disabilities and has not had to deal with half of the obstacles
Rick has. Nor have I had the same hardships Dick has dealt with.

But I sure related to Dick. I know the feeling of telling the "experts" that your
son is capable of doing much, much more than any test or diagnosis would
ever reveal. I know the feeling of putting out 110% effort to help him realize
those untapped potentials.

And I sure know the joy when he reaches them. ;-)

Thanks so much for sharing this beautiful and inspirational story.

Lizards do have hearts and they never let us down.

I've read a story about the father and son but never saw the video. It's very moving.

We need to hear more of these stories.

33. Most people in the Boston area know about the Hoyts.
Edited on Fri Nov-10-06 11:50 AM by Gormy Cuss
They are two of the regulars to be spotted in the Marathon, much like the late great Johnny Kelley.
Thanks for bringing their story to DU.
:toast:

From Sports Illustrated, By Rick Reilly

I try to be a good father. Give my kids mulligans. Work nights to pay For their text messaging. Take them to swimsuit shoots.

But compared with Dick Hoyt, I suck.

Eighty-five times he's pushed his disabled son, Rick, 26.2 miles in Marathons. Eight times he's not only pushed him 26.2 miles in a Wheelchair but also towed him 2.4 miles in a dinghy while swimming and Pedaled him 112 miles in a seat on the handlebars--all in the same day.

Dick's also pulled him cross-country skiing, taken him on his back Mountain climbing and once hauled him across the U.S. On a bike. Makes Taking your son bowling look a little lame, right?

And what has Rick done for his father? Not much--except save his life.
