Since I seem to have started a "Rank the Bands of the 60s" trend here, let's take it a step further.
My rankings:
1. Brian 2. Carl 3. Dennis 4. Al 5. Mike
Honorable mention: Bruce

3. Maybe we should include the Wrecking Crew as well. |
|
After all, they played on a lot of the Beach Boys records (especially Pet Sounds).

6. Yeah- they are great... |

Hal Blaine is one of my favorite drummers, and that chick on bass- (I want to say Carol Kaye for some reason?)
I thought of listing Terry Asher as well...

One of the great session bassists of the 60s. Unfortunately, she has a habit of taking credit for records she didn't play on, like the Detroit Motown sessions. That was James Jamerson, not Carol Kaye.

Yes, of course. Jamerson was just a hack. I forgot.

14. Jamerson was certainly no hack. |
|
That is NOT the point. All I'm saying is I've seen the contracts that Carol said she played on. She was a WHITE FEMALE playing BASS in a time where that was an anomoly. She DID DO what she said she did according to the paper trail.

15. Are you referring to Motown sessions in LA |
|
or Motown sessions in Detroit?
I don't doubt for a second that she played on Motown sessions when Berry Gordy moved his center of operations to LA, but I question whether she played on sessions at Hitsville.

5. Brian did the majority of the falsetto. |
|
Mike sang bass, Carl sang tenor, me and little brother would join right in there, in the sky Lord in the sky.

7. Yeah- but it's Al or Carl after Brian went nuts... |
|
I dont believe Brian sings much after "Friends"- and Al can sing all of their parts- in fact he did just that on the single "Come & Go"- which is Al doing every single vocal track...

9. Yeah, chainsmoking didn't help Bri any. |
|
Then he got into that "tough guy voice" around the time of 15 Big Ones. Apparently he was embarrassed by his falsetto and refused to do it on LA (Light Album).
I personally think Carl had a better falsetto than Al. That countermelody on "Good Timin'" is gorgeous. But Al could pull it off too, especially on a song like "Be Here In The Morning," which is great.

and he truly was a MENACE, in the most lovable, albeit threatening way, mostly toward himself. Ya know, Dr. Fate, I looked on helplessly as Kenny Kirkland, Jaco Pastorius, Tommy Bolin AND DENNIS charged full throttle into the great beyond POWERLESS to change the trajectory... Everyone is responsible for his OWN life. They were ALL good boys...

Ricky Fataar and Blondie Chaplin get honourable mentions, as does the Captain, Darryl Dragon.
