1. I would LOVE to go to work tomorrow.
Unfortunately, I don't have a job. I will spend tomorrow answering calls from bill collectors.

14. Bill collectors...
I hear you. Paul missed a payment to a credit card company (he actually filed it under the wrong date) and I had to deal with their call.

Best of luck to you on finding a job. Where are you located?

2. well
I like working this time of year - the herd has been thinned so rush hour is a breeze plus it's just not as busy. And I get to hand over the pager tomorrow and as a reward for taking on-call for the past seven days, I get Friday off. Since Weds and Thurs are company holidays, I can look forward to a five day break. So going to work tomorrow and Tuesday won't be so bad.

6. I relate...
I LOVE my job but it is kind of hard thinking about getting back into the swing of things after being off four days for the holidays (for those of us who were fortunate enough to have the time off). I went to San Francisco for the holidays with a good friend, and I have to tell you, it was hard leaving. However, I count my blessings EVERYDAY that I'm lucky enough to be working and lucky enough to have been able to have a nice holiday. I've had more than one Christmas when I've been out of work and it's HORRIBLE - so my sympathy goes out to those of you who are looking for work and I KNOW that good things will happen in '04 - peace :-)

8. I would give anything if I had a job I liked
Look, if anyone is going to be offended by my talking about this, I apologize in advance. I don't want to get bombarded by a thousand "at least you have a job" replies.

I'm working in a field 180 degrees opposite of where I want to be. The problem is, I don't know exactly "where I want to be" actually is, and I don't know exactly how to get there.

I know that there are three sides of me that I believe have to have some kind of voice in my life in order for me to really be happy: There is Selwynn the activist - concerned about human rights, civil liberties, social justice, liberal politics and helping us all achieve a decent life. There is Selwynn the philosopher/theologian, passionate about the place of religion/spirituality in life, the radical Christian theologian with active interest in countering the lies of fundamentalism, the person who really can't help but think, speak and feel religiously, for it is who I am. And there's Selwynn the writer - perhaps not very well reflected in this particular late night ramble, but it is true just the same.

But here in lies my first problem - I don't know how to move from abstracts to particulars. If someone were to ask me where I wanted to work I would respond that I want to work for an organization that has as its mission, the betterment of the human condition. That's a little too broad to do much with. Things that get me excited are things like the idea of being involved in communications for an organization like the ACLU or another organization actively involved in social issues. Sometimes I go the other route and think about going back to school to do graduate work (I have BA in philosophy) and perhaps becoming a professor of religion and philosophy by day, writing by night and being involved in my community.

That all sounds great, but I don't really know what I want to do. But more importantly, I can't afford to do any of it. I'm so strung up by stupid debt that I'm madly trying to get out of that right now I couldn't afford to make less money than I currently make (I world in the tech world as a manager of an engineering team - yeah.. I know... way out of left field, but I'm a pretty smart guy so I can do that stuff too, I just hate it.)

Anyway, this post has no point. Sorry. I just wish I worked at a job I felt passionate about, where I could come home from work and feel proud of myself. :(

16. I hear ya
I am going through the same thing, although I'm just freelancing and "between" jobs. I know I'll be working in the corporate world again soon and I'd like to do something I'm passionate about. I will probably volunteer more next year and see if that will help me enter the non-profit sector a bit easier.

9. I'm off work until Jan. 5.
Luckily, I have a job with lots of vacation time. So at the end of the year, I usually have about a week's time left over and have to take or lose it. It's going to be hard going back to work after all that time off.

12. Isn't it great?
Trouble is, when you have that much vacation time, you can never use it all up and have to scramble like I do at the end of the year to get them in. Plus my company also gives me 2 personal days and 1 floating holiday. And then I have 10 sick days a year. I have 6 left, but alas, I have lost them. Love my job--lots of time off and great benefits, but the pay sucks.

17. Selwynn..
I'm sorry you're having to go through what you are going through. It does take a lot of soul searching sometimes to get to where you want to be. I actually went to hypnosis and had some very positive results. You may consider finding a hypnotherapist (I highly recommend you go to someone who is recommended to you). You also might try some self hypnosis tapes that you can buy at an alternative book store. Good luck -
