Watch for Deer - It's Mating Season and car/deer encounters are way up.
We have a ton of deer around Kansas City. And there are always a whole lot of deer/car collisions. I guess four people were killed last year and about 350 wrecks in Missouri. Just about the same in Kansas.

Be extra careful at dawn and dusk. And if you see one then watch for the second one right behind it.

1. Yep. And tip from an old-timer
(not me, mind you, an old-timer told me this one)

...Deer and elk have a good flight instinct, but it gets a little garbled when crossing roads. Usually, they've come down a path to a water source, where sometimes predators hang out as well. So when they encounter trouble, instinct kicks in and they rush back along the path they took to get there.

Usually a good call, but if one has crossed the road in front of you, then spots you, he'll as likely as not retrace his steps back across the road when he gets spooked. So beware!

2. My husband is an auto insurance estimator.
He always gets really busy at this time of year. We're in suburban-rural PA, where there are tons of deer.

3. I hit a deer in Feb.
Totaled my car but I was fine.

The deer wasn't. :(

But I got a new car out of the deal so all's well that ends well!

4. I hate driving in or out of Austin at night.
Poor Bambis.

A few years ago I saw a deer totally obliterated by a speeding truck. Nasty.

6. My trip through Wisconsin last week on I-94
was a total bloodbath. I saw so many dead deer on the side of the road, I couldn't believe it!

7. Oh yes
It is a year round hazard where I live in the boonies, but especially now that they are being hunted and freaking out. I try to tell them all to stay in my yard, but they don't listen...

8. Especially in Michigan, now that Ted Nugent moved to TX
He's harvesting a lot less deer in Michigan, these days. "Harvest" is his word, not mine, although I have no problem with deer hunters. I'll eat Bambi, but I could never bring myself to shoot him.
