John and Yoko on the Mike Douglas Show...
I went to see The US vs. John Lennon yesterday. There were quite a few clips of the week Lennon and Ono co-hosted The Mike Douglas show. Bobby Seale was a guest, as was Jerry Rubin. It was very surreal watching John interview Rubin and Mike just sitting there taking in every word (I know in his autobiography Douglas said Rubin pissed him off. You can't tell by the clip I saw). Does anyone have the set of videos Rhino put out about 10 years ago? Are the shows as weird as they look?
Another surreal Douglas moment I remember from the '70s was Hugh Hefner being interviewed by Burr Tillstrom's puppets and Fran Allison. I'd REALLY like to see that again...

1. Another surreal Mike Douglas Show moment...
was when Martha Mitchell, wife of former Attorney General John Mitchell, was a co-host for the week. Watergate was getting more serious, and Ms. Mitchell was talking about all the dirt she had on the White House and how they were trying to silence her. She was, of course, extremely prescient. But it was still sort of surreal watching it then (and the pained look Mike Douglas had listening to her)

4. Mike had alot of very strange people as regular guests
Martha Mitchell, Professor Irwin Corey, Mason Reese, Uri Gellar, Ruth Gordon, Moms Mabley. He had big names too, but those are the ones I remember vividly (can you tell I watched his show every night after coming home from school?)

2. I have the boxed set...
but it's been a long time since I watched the whole set. I'll have to cue it up and see it again.

3. Didn't they sing a song...
That went something like this...

I'm proud to be a New York City hippie...

With dirty feet and long and scraggly hair...

A livin' with the rats and cock-a-roaches...
