Need some good thoughts, please.
My mother was having chest pains this morning, so I got my dad to drive her to the doctor. They gave her nitrous, after which she felt better, but she then went to the hospital for tests. I guess they're going to do an EKG on her. My dad is there with her, but I can't get there because I don't have a car.

I'm so worried. I hope she'll be okay. I can't get there, so this is the only place I can talk.

1. Hugs for you and your family...
   You did the right thing by telling your father to take her to the doctor.

Hope it turns out to be something relatively minor.

2. Good thoughts with you and your family...
all the positive energy I can muster is headed your way. She'll be fine. She's already feeling better and the tests will tell them what the problem is and they can correct it.

It's gonna be fine. She's gonna be fine. Try not to worry (I know, I know) and figure out what you're going to do to make her smile when you see her.

3. Update.
Hi guys,

I guess my mother did have a heart attack, but they managed to stop it at the hospital. They're admitting her while they determine what caused it.

I've never cried so much in my life.

11. Treatment has improved by leaps and bounds
Edited on Tue Nov-14-06 04:14 PM by Patiod
Akoto - If you could hear what I hear from Cardiologists (I interview docs for a living) you would be much more reassured. Amazing strides have been made very recently in treatment of heart problems - improvements in survival stats have been astounding. Hospitals all over the country are getting a much better, statistics-driven grip on what works - what should be done for heart patients and how quickly it should be done. They have instituted policies and procedures that have radically cut mortality for heart patients. Don't be surprised or too concerned if they bring her right to the cath lab for a stent procedure - not a lot of "wait and see" anymore.

Any time the heart is involved it's scary, but there's so much good the doctors can do now.

Sorry your transportation situation sucks right now, but I'm sure she knows you'd be there if you could.

Keep us posted - we'll hold your family in the Light.

/dealing with my 82-yo mom's heart issues too -- know what you're going through!

on edit: just read your update --- sounds like they got her within the "golden hour" when they can do the most good.

13. Thanks for the information.
I would find a ride there, but she probably doesn't need to see me right now, broken up as I am. She's scared and stressed enough.

She did call me, which is (I guess) a good sign insofar as how she's doing. They gave her nitro and apparently she felt instantly better, which would seem to suggest a clogged artery. Even though she's in good shape and doesn't smoke/drink, she's had heriditary cholesterol problems for her entire life.

14. Another update.
Hi everyone,

Thanks a lot for the good thoughts. They did help me to calm down a little!

My mom went through some testing tonight. The doctors at the hospital are kind of baffled about how she had a heart attack. The original blood test from the paramedics said heart attack. All of the tests at the hospital come out normal, though.

They're going to inject some dye into her heart tomorrow to see how it flows through the arteries. The waiting is the hardest part!

21. Thanks for all of the well wishes, everyone. Update.
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 10:13 AM by Akoto
My mom had some dye injected into her heart this morning. It revealed that a secondary artery (not a main one, thankfully) was 90% blocked.

Tomorrow, she is being moved to a hospital with a specialized cardiac center, where they are going to perform a stent on her. That means they'll put a balloon inside of the artery and help it to open back up. If all goes well, she'll get to come home in a couple of days.

22. Sounds like great news
Edited on Wed Nov-15-06 10:29 AM by Patiod
they found the cause, and there's a (relatively) easy fix. They snake the balloon in from an artery in the groin! Just a tiny tiny little incision.

Great to hear it, Akoto - been thinking about your family all last night. In fact, it prompted me to call my mom and talk to her about her heart.

25. Another update, and good news!
Hi everyone,

My mom's stent operation went well. It was really painful when they were taking the tube out, and it still hurts quite a bit (they had to apply a lot of pressure since they entered through a major artery). In the end, though, she pulled through fine!

She was already up and walking today, and she's coming home. Hurrah. Thanks for the good thoughts, all.
