Playstation 3 (after all the madness dies down..)
Something funny happened this past weekend--while enjoying my Emergence Day gorefest on my awesome 360, I had a new idea:

"as much as I love this 360, i don't want my HD experience to be totally controlled by Mico$oft..." While it would be no poblem to buy the new HD-DVD drive for my 360...I would in effect give M$ total control of my enetrtainment time and money. am I selling my 360 and games? Hell NO! BUT..once the holiday madness dies down, I'm going to buy a Playstaion 3. It's not xheap, so I'm going to be saving up anyhow. And secondly, there's another reason why I'd add the PS3 with Blu Ray: one of the companies supporting the Blu Ray format is Apple. I'm a very loyal Mac user, so if steve Jobs is backing Blu Ray, it must be offering something good that Apple will also support.

But this is taking plac in January or so, meanwhile lok for me on Xbox Live playing Gears of War (not tonight, I'm gogin to work tomorrow at 4:30am)

1. Did you know...
that Apple actually has Microsoft over a barrel when it comes to the XBox 360? Why? The DevKits for the XBox 360 are (height of irony here) PowerMac G5s. :D

2. i saw that!
There was a photo some former M$ employee took with a truckload of Power Mac G5s, and he spilled the beans that those were going to be the first 360 dev kits  These were thevery first kits too, although I wouldn't be surprised if some are still in use today.

aout the PS3 launch, there's no real must have game title. i haven't seen the PS3 kiosk anywhere yet, but the only title getting any buzz is Resistance Fall of Ma. Interesting, but since I have Gears of War here on my 360, it's not enough. I will say that the next Metal Gear game s looking nice, the F1 game is one I'll buy, Gundam of course since i loved the Gundam tv series from way back. i haven't played Final Fantasy before at all, so that's not high on my wish list. i just wantt o see Xmen 3 on Blu Ray :-)

Oh, isn't Sony supposed to be a "blue company" as well?

12. how is that controller?
the Wii certainly looks like fun, the PS3 is all about raw power and such. Today I'm going to check out the PS3 in person, mainly to see how the famed Blu-Ray movies look.

13. time with a PS3 kiosk
i was able to spend some good time with a PS3 kiosk at my local Best Buy, and here's the lowdown:

overall, it does have alot of potential. the problem is, at the launch there's no compelling reason for an ordinary person like myself to buy one. None of the first 5 games are anything special--the NBA game from Sony had players who have plastic look to them :eyes: Havng said that, the Gundam and F1 racing game titles looked good on video. way betetr than my 360? Certainly not.

The controller does feel nice, no hand discomfort at all I'm happy to report. NO rumble will take some getting used to though..

I watched some scenes from Cars on Blu Ray. Very nice! but any diffeent between 1080i and 1080p are barely noticable, and with my having an HDTV since June, I can verify that anything at 1080 whatever looks damn good. NOt having an HDMi cable included sucks however :-( And a remote to watch Blu Ray on the PS3 will cost $30. So I'll have to add $130 to mine...

Finally the Playstation Network isn't avaialable until the first owners download an update The one advantage over Xbox Live is that the Network will be free. i'll wait befor grading that.

my grade on the PS3 is a B-, lots of potential indeed, but it'll be a while before we start seeing it's true capablities put to good use. And it;s a good idea to see how any hardware problems are dealt with.

14. What HDTV Do You Own?
Edited on Thu Nov-16-06 04:15 PM by jayfish
What resolutions does it support? 720p, 1080i, 1080p? There has been some news in the past couple of days that if you have an HDTV that doesn't support 720p(the resolution that most PS3 games run at) or 1080P, the PS3 will downconvert your output to 480p rather than upconvert to 1080i. That's a deal breaker for, potentially, millions.
