In defense of (some) "I'm leaving DU" threads

First of all, let me say that the copycat threads and the threads making fun of the "I'm leaving" threads aren't all that fun to read either. If you truly don't give two shits and are bothered by the leaving DU threads, use that handy little hide thread feature. I use it CONSTANTLY.

Second of all, while I'm not always fond of these threads either, I can understand someone who has been around as long as HT posting a goodbye thread. No, I don't know him personally and, honestly, haven't had that much interaction with him here, but I kinda like to know when and why a long time poster that I'm so used to seeing around quits, if for no other reason than to be sure nothing untoward happened to them.

Lastly, I could post a LOOOONG list of DU'ers that have thrown their hands up in disgust and walked away from DU if I didn't have another hour of dictation waiting to be done. I love this place and I'll always be around, lurking in the background and posting the occasional thread or reply to a thread that interests me, but some of what goes on around here truly makes me cringe and, as a result, I don't enjoy the Lounge nearly as much as I used to. I think a lot more people here would agree than disagree with me but, honestly, most of them won't say so because they don't want to be flamed or accused of taking sides.

Oh yeah, one last thing... it's already been mentioned in another thread but I'll second that emotion here. There are TONS of threads about the silliest, most inane drivel imagineable posted here on a daily basis. I don't complain about it, I simply hide the thread and move the hell on. Point being that threads about leaving are no more silly than someone posting that she just had sex, etc. Judge not lest ye be judged and all that... you get the point.

Everybody has their own things that they identify with, and some will get so angry when somebody posts something offensive about it, but they themselves will happily trash something else that is intrinsic to another person's identity. We pride ourselves on being principled, but actually in so many ways so many of us are just like the freepers. It's just that we hold different things dear than they do. Some people think that you are a good person just because you vote for a candidate with a 'D' after their name. They will go on about how we are the Good People and then be horrible to somebody they disagree with. Some days I am so utterly disgusted with the behaviour of people here I wonder why I stay.

here, I used to get so pissed off when someone would tell me to "lighten up" over certain things that push my buttons. I would then notice that those EXACT SAME PEOPLE could get pretty f-ing worked up when their particular ox was being gored. Don't even DARE to tell them to take a pill!

Since I quit fighting with people, I'm able to sit back and enjoy the hypocrisy - those that are guilty of it have no clue, usually, so it's pretty comical to see them get all pissed off. We've got quite a few busybodies here who think nothing of injecting themselves into situations they have no business being in, then get real pissy when it's turned around and used against them.

I chuckle at them, and that's my dirty little secret for today!

I've stated the same on other threads, but it bears repeating. I was amazed at the juvenile making -fun thread I saw yesterday. Truly amazed.

I can only hope that both HT and RL learn from this how much they are apreciated. Secondly, that the kiddies learn that the immature games get old, very very fast. Thirdly, I am very happy to learn that many Duers feel the same as I about this kind of behavior.:thumbsup:

People also shouldn't be exempt from criticism just because they have mental issues. I do not have a dog in this fight. I don't know the guy personally and I wasn't just referring to him. There was one other person who left yesterday but I think a lot of people don't realize it because it got pushed off the front page multiple times by copycat threads. I'd venture to say that, MAYBE, she deserved a little more sympathy than she got. Maybe you have problems with HT and you're absolutely overjoyed that he left. Maybe you're even right to feel that way. My only point is that it doesn't have to turn into an all day hate fest when someone posts an "I'm leaving DU" thread, chock full of copycat threads and piling on. :shrug:

But, I have noticed that those who enjoy making life miserable for some, are usually the same ones

the average mentality in the Lounge seems to be that
