I noticed a lot of people have nostalgia for the classics. If you go back and actually play them, you realize they're just not that fun.
There was a great article I read a few months ago were they gave an atari to modern kids. It was pretty funny reading.

2. Ye Gods - to think I used to play text-based games! |
|
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, all the Zork games. One snowy Christmas week, I spent hours trying to navigate the big old house in Humbug.

4. One thing about older arcade games though |
|
A lot of them had a streak of zany, surreal creativity that is lacking in most current games. Q-Bert and Burgertime come to mind here.
Still, it is true that nostalgia makes a lot of those games better. Playing Donkey Kong on MAME gets maddeningly repetitious very quickly when your playtime isn't limited to quarter supply.

7. Yep, they sure have...:) |
|
I still miss my NES, and would love to pick one up again...I miss my Mike Tysons Punch Out, Tiger Heli, and a few others....:) I'm on the ps2 now, and my progression was...
1. Atari
2. NES
3. Sega Genesis
4. SNES
5. Ps1
6. Ps2.....
The ps2 is a lot better than the other systems I've had...although, I still do play the SNES from time to time...the Mortal Kombat/Killer Instinct, and Zelda, and Mario games are still fun to me...:) I'm a big fan of fighting games, primarily Tekken games...although, I haven't picked up Tekken 5 yet. But, Tekken 4 blew badly, so I'm not so sure 5 will be any better...Tekken Tag is still my favorite....
My other gaming interests are games similiar to Devil May Cry...same game style, look, POV...I really don't care for first person POV, or the look down on your character view, like Baldurs Gate Dark Alliance, or the New Justice League game...I was very disappointed that the justice league game was a looking down pov...but, superman returns looks like its going to be great...looks like a GTA set with metropolis, superman, and his enemies...and you can fly at the speed of light...graphics look amazing...I can't wait to pick it up next week...:)

12. You are me! ...or I am you...? |
|
:hi: Your progression in gaming systems and taste in games completely mirrors mine. I miss the good old action adventure of the Mario Series and the sheer crazy combos that you could do in the Killer Instinct....
I find that it's so difficult these days to find fellow gamers that enjoy fighting games as I do. But, it's refreshing to see that I'm not alone. You should definitely give Tekken 5 a try; I think you will be pleasantly surprised. :) Also, since it seems that our tastes are nearly identical, I would suggest that you may want to try some other game genres such as an in-depth RPG games. I have to admit that I've only played one in-depth RPG -- Final Fantasy X -- I absolutely loved it! It was just like playing a movie. It doesn't really have all those crazy POV that some games have and I really recommend it!

I've been a gamer since there have been games.
I'm now a recovery World Of Warcraft addict. It has been two days since my last slip...

10. They've improved graphically, but that in no way guarantees that they're |
|
actually fun.
Ultima 2 or The Bard's Tale are more fun than the latest and greatest NeverwinterNights. SuperMarioKart64 is more fun than most of the latest racing games.

11. Still, no game has grabbed my attention |
|
money, time and system like Origin's Wing Commander series. It was an astonishing achievement when it first came out in 1990, and no series has affected me or drawn me into its universe more completely. Nothing like that on the market today, sadly.

13. Look prettier but far, far, far less inspired or original. |
|
Once upon a time every game was lovingly crafted and generally original or unique in some way, making playing it a totally new experience, unlike today where generally every game is the same old game, but prettier.
