13. No, I haven't
I am not fortunate enough to live in the apple state. We get what we can down here in Texas. I'll keep an eye out for them though. Are they tart? I'm not much of one for oversweet apples. Red delicious is as far as I go. Most of the time, I'm a Granny Smith kind of gal.

if you don't like too-sweet apples, the Pink Lady is perfect. Highly recommended.

of course, i replied to the wrong post...i've never had a Cameo until i moved here (seattle).

it's a good apple, if you can find it.

List of apples I like that are NOT available in California:

Honey Crisp
Honey Gold
Haralson
Cortland
Braeburn

And a few I have probably forgotten.

I miss our annual trips to the orchard.

31. I wonder if it has something to do with the wax coating...
Looks fresh on the outside, but rots from the inside.

Even some of the organic apples have a bit of a wax coating. The skin should start shrinking and wrinkling first when they're not coated.

34. So do you put it back
if you don't like the texture? Hole and all?

I stick to only a couple of types, because many common ones get mealy so quick. If I can find them, Orins are at the top of my list, then Ambrosia, then Pink Lady. If nothing else is available, I'll take Galas. I will not go near Red or Golden Delicious.

43. What's the equivalent of mealiness for oranges?
Whatever it is, I had one yesterday. And it was from the Big Island, too. Usually Big Island oranges are to oranges what (you're telling me) Pink Ladies or Honeycrisps are to apples (we don't export them, though. Sorry. :( ) But this one was nasty in the same way that California navels can get nasty: half of some of the sections were even dried out. Ick!

I suppose I shouldn't have been so elated to see Big Island oranges for 89 cents a pound after all.
