Turducken: Discuss
If I understand this, it's a turkey that's stuffed with a duck which itself is stuffed with a chicken.

It sounds... well, those with experience, please chime in. My impression is that this is, on paper and in concept, a deliciously decadent entree but in reality not all that. Am I right or wrong?

3. I've always wanted to try it
But not enough to shell out the money to do so. Those things are expensive!

On another note, a few years ago several of us got into a turducken discussion and one vegetarian guy said something like, "Great. Now we can celebrate our thankfulness by killing three animals, instead of just one." I can certainly see how a vegetarian would hate this concept, but I'd still try it.

4. Paula Dean on Food Network....
She cooks one on her Thanksgiving show this week. I saw it last night and it looked delicious but, damn, there's no way I'd attempt to put that together. The show will be repeating if you have a chance to catch it (& you can tolerate her voice)or you can go to Foodnetwork.com and check out the recipe.

5. Turducken is one of those "don't try this at home, kids" recipes....
Like deep-fried turkey.

Deep fried turkey is fine, but I'll let the pros risk 3rd degree burns.

6. Speaking of deep-fried turkey...
(which, btw, somehow has "disappointment potential" written all over it)

Is the huge vat necessary? I mean, what if you just fried the parts a la fried chicken? (when was the last time you saw deep-fried intact chicken?)

Has anyone ever tried this experiment?

8. My sister and her family, who now live in Texas, did it
a few years back. Actually quite satisfying, meat waas delicious. Plus there's a lot to be said for the "standing around the vat drinking beer" aspect. :)

10. My dog loves it.

I'd never heard of such a thing until I started buying it for my dog. I STLL didn't know it was a real human consumable until I stumbled into a discussion about it on DU a few years ago.

I'm personally a vegetarian so.... meh.

16. Actually the duck is inside the chicken, which is inside the turkey. And there are 3 dressings.
The 80-year-old man that lives down the street from me is making one on Thursday. I think he also puts bacon on the outside of the turkey.

27. Yep, one of those old Hollywood bios that are largely fictional...with Alan
Alda's dad, BTW. And Oscar Levant is the only thing (other than the music) that makes "An American in Paris" good — I usually love Gene Kelly, but that movie always leaves me cold.

My favorite Levant performance is in "Humoresque" with the great John Garfield and Joan Crawford.

22. The chicken goes in the duck. Ducks are bigger than chickens.
Actually, I don't think it matters WHICH order you assemble the damn thing.

You know there's gonna be some asshole out there who makes the Mother of All Stuffed Winged Camels: a balut inside a parakeet inside a pigeon inside a grouse inside a chicken inside a capon inside a duck inside a goose inside a turkey inside a kiwi inside an ostrich.

With bacon wrapped around it.

21. I heard about this a few years ago.
I understand John Madden is quite the fan of those monstrosities. The food industry will never fail to horrify and appall me with their new ways of using the bodies of tortured animals. And you can even get turduckhen cat food. Oy. Or as the vegetarian referenced here says, now you can kill even more animals. Whee.
