I can still remember my aunt lambasting my uncle because he paid $20 for a new-fangled gadget called .....

a ballpoint pen...

i can also remember being thrilled with the latest thing from the phone company...

"800" toll-free numbers :)

12. now you are not that old, dang it
The TI-30 came out in 1978 or so. It was only $30. Two inches thick and the size of a checkbook and it did factorials, trigonometric functions, y to the x, square root, logarithms and natural logs. At least they were all over my chemistry class that year.

14. My first electronic, hand-held, calculator
was a gift from a friend who went to Japan on business frequently.
6 digit capacity.
I took it to work and people were AMAZED.

Bill also brought me my first electronic mini-piano/organ (remember those?) and my first electric pepper mill.

18. I remember the first time I saw a flat-panel monitor...
...it was at a very well funded Navy command that does some very cool things. At the time, a 15' could run you about $1,700. They had probably
like 300 or 400. I was flabbergasted.

28. First electric typewriters...
and then electronic typewriters. I saw a typewriter in a store the other day and my kids were looking at it like it was something that belonged in a museum.

Then there's cable...color tee vee...stereo speakers...cassettes, much less CDs...VCRs...yikes, I could go on and on and on...

And the internets.
