David Bowie in "The Prestige"
What a great job he did. The movie was pretty good overall, but there were so many good acting performances in particular.

He played Nikola Tesla. He had a pretty good Russian accent, but his poise and delivery were outstanding. He was so good my wife refused to believe me when I whispered to her, "That's David Bowie!" I had to show her the credits on Yahoo! after we got home.

Hugh Jackman did pretty good, too. He played his character's "double," as well as his character. The double had some funny mannerisms that I've never seen before from Jackman.

1. Definitely well acted, and well directed.
I know some don't like Nolan's style of directing, but he has an eye for a great performance, and doesn't let his actors get sloppy.

4. David Bowie acting! well there's a first time for everything I suppose.
I really think the guy makes great music but I wished he would stop trying to act.

I hope you're right and he makes a good job of his latest part. He's had enough practice.

10. First time?
The Hunger. Just a Gigolo. Man who Fell to Earth. The Linguini Incident. Merry Chrismas Mr. Lawrence. Labyrinth. Last Temptation of Christ. Basquiat. And more, including starring on Broadway as The Elephant Man.

His first acting credit on IMDB is from 1967.

6. My little boy is currently obsessed with "Labyrinth"
I think I might have a future AD&D geek here--not that I mind. :)

As for Bowie's acting--I've only seen him in "The Hunger" and "Labyrinth", and I thought he was wonderful in both of those movies. :)

18. AD&D?
I doubt that...unless you've got some old books lying around.

They're up to edition 3.5 now...

7. LOL I had the same reaction with my wife, I said "I think that's David Bowie!" and she
said "No way, I'll bet you."

Should have bet!

I really enjoyed this, and must say that Michael Caine is still the man even though he's a billion years old. This is one he definitely didn't just mail in.

The plot resolution was creepy, in a way that I like, although if I had the, ahem, capability that the guy possessed, I think I'd use it for more or different purposes than he did.

8. Hee hee I tried to bet my wife, too, because she truly didn't believe me.
But then I told her I'd seen his name in the credits, and I wasn't getting anything out of it after that.

9. The guy who played Tesla's right hand man was very good also.
A touch of mystery and menace.

12. That was Andy Serkis...
He was the actor that played Gollum in LOTR and King Kong in the latest version. He is very talented and it was good to see him playing a good sized role that was not animated.

I know this because my 14 is the hugest LOTR fan (as well as a Christian Bale fan...another prestige actor). We have had a rough day and she cannot sleep so we were reading here. She would find me remiss if i did not post this info. ;)

13. Aha, so THAT is what Serkis looks like. I liked how expressive his face
and eyes were, especially when he was arranging to introduce the magician to the wonders of the Tesla compound.

11. By the way, the Internet Movie Database (IMDB.com) is, I think, the single best resource
for movie info of this type that there is (cast members, director, awards, trivia, etc.).

It is occasionally in error on something, but I think it is the most authoritative online movie reference.

15. Excellent film. Very dark and edgy
Extremely well structured; full of reverberating symmetries.

The plot is a house of mirrors.

Loved it.
