Beaujolais nouveau...
It's time...the season is open. Don't forget to stock up on this tasty fresh wine, just released. It's inexpensive, refreshing, easy to drink, makes a great gift.

In my many searches here in NYC, my researches yield this advice, based on this old photo:

The bottle on the LEFT is available everywhere...it's ok if that's all that's available...but search harder, and better stuff can be found.
Now...the bottle on the RIGHT is my fave, a whole different experience, a little pricier, but well worth the search!

Just look for the label with the little puppet-show, and ya can't go wrong!

1. I'm not much of a wine drinker...
Edited on Wed Nov-22-06 12:47 PM by VespertineIconoclast
but, I'm not afraid to try new things. ;) I've never had a Beaujolais Nouveau, how would you describe the flavor?

I don't know if you have ever tried Belgian Beer -- specifically Linderman's Kriek Lambic beer -- it's fantastic!

Their other beers are delicious also! :9 Here's some more info here: http://www.merchantduvin.com/pages/5_breweries/lindemans_kriek.html

3. Thanks for the reply!
:hi:

As far as the flavor of the Beaujolais nouveau, it's "fresh" wine, un-aged, so expect it to be tart, juicy, and light. The Le Pere La Grolle almost tastes like a raspberry kind of juicy. As these wines are make to be drunk "young," they are made without introducing tannins in (as reds usually do by adding in the skins) which omits any of the "bite" of the usual red wine. Drink chilled.

On the lambics, I'll confess I'm way overdue to have some again. I tasted some during a brief visit to Belgium (wow, do they know brewing there!) and I look forward to picking some up this winter. Thanks for the recommendation and the reminder!

:)

10. No problem.
:hi:

You got me with the almost-raspberry taste! I'll definitely try to find a Le Pere La Grolle around these parts so I can give it a taste....

Once I find a brand I like, I usually stick with it -- so I haven't really branched out into other lambic brewers' beers but, if they're anything like Lindeman give them a try! :)

So now I know which bottle to steal when I break through the heating duct, sliding down on ropes ala Tom "crazy" Cruise in Mission Impossible.

I'll set out an extra glass, so you don't have to go bumping about in the dark...;)

4. To me, Duboeuf is like the Wal-Mart of Beuujolais makers
I mean, in a pinch you'll use it if you have to but there are so many better alternatives out there. I avoid his wines like I would avoid a $2 hooker

8. Sorry, sorry...
I meant no slander against them...just commenting on the mass-availability factor akin to wines: if a place doesn't stock a ton of varieties of a product, they tend to just go with the best-known. Just the hastiness of my posting to blame.

When I go camping, believe-you-me there is no other sweet coming along on the trip but Hershey bars with almonds.

What a relief. I'll be out most of the day (buying Hershey bars :) among other things) and will check carefully for intruders or boobytraps when I return, nevertheless...

17. AAAAHHHH!!!! NOOOO!!!!! NOOOOO!!! ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have only had a migraine-type headache twice in my life, and both times I had beaujolais nouveau that previous evening

The first time, I assumed I had drunk too much. The second time I only had 2-3 small glasses - just as blinding a headache.

And yet, I can drink Beaujolais in moderation without suffering at all the next day.

Oh, and don't be dissin the Hershey's -- they're one of my clients!

27. My investigation so far:
Went today to a few "sure-thing" liquor stores while in Manhattan, and no Le Pere...seems everybody has DeBeof because that's air-lifted in right away upon release in France.
I was told that other "brands" would be available soon, maybe this weekend, as the wine shipped on ships will be arriving. No clue though, as yet, to any of my fave....

Will let you know when I find something good....:hi:

32. I regularly order wine from this site for shipment to Brooklyn.
http://wine.woot.com/

Great deals, but so far limited to West Coast USA. This weeks offering is not of interest to me, but I'm sure it would be for someone looking for a high quality cabernet that is also kosher.

I've probably bought 4 or 5 cases of wine over the past 5 months or so there.

It's a great site for any wine drinker... new offering every Monday morning at 1 am.

Highly recommended.

20. Has anyone tried this year's vintage?
I love the Noveau, but don't have the $ to buy any until next week, although I assume it will be served at the dinner I'm going to tomorrow.

The best recent year was whatever year that France had that heat wave that killed off a bunch of their elderly. I tried 3 or 4 different brands that year, and all were of excellent quality.

21. Why drink an unfinished wine?
Beaujolais nouveau sucks, in my humble opinion. No depth, the reason I drink wine in the first place.

It is like drinking white zinfindel ..... what's the point? none of it is any good.

If you're a wine snob (and you certainly sound like one), deal with it.

24. Winemakers--you know, the folks who actually know how to make the stuff--LOVE roses
I like the "good" stuff, but I'm never going to sneer at somebody for whatever kind of wine they happen to like. You like it, then I say YAY. Drink, and (the important part that the snobs forget), ENJOY.

34. No wine snob, I just like wine that tastes good!
Is that too much to ask?

We went to a tasting at a local store yesterday, bought two bottles each of voignier and pinot noir. The Pinot was very good, and only $9 a bottle! we can be quite cheap in our snobbery.

But you're right, it may not be available here, so I may have to wait until I get to Italy. California has been producing wonderful sangiovese and pinot grigio, so they may plant this grape in the future also.

I love German white wines. Gewürztraminer and riesling.... excellent!

And how have you been?

Seriously though, the seasonal variation eliminates quesswork on my part when choosing, and does make a nice holiday gift for friends and colleagues. And sometimes all of those tannins gives me a headache that's nice to do without.
