2. The term is host. A lot of people seem to like godaddy.com.
But it all depends on what technologies you want in your new website. Are your pages static or will you use a language like PHP? Do you want to build the site using tools they provide or will you build it locally and FTP up the site? Do you need a database? Would you want to use ASP? Preference on Apache vs IIS (go apache BTW)?

But I hear godaddy.com is really cheap, and big, and reliable.

14. I'm starting our Dayton PDA
site with BlueHost as the web thing.....I'm obviously not the developer.....Dr. Ellis, her son is doing it. He just graduated from OSU. We want to have a discussion board.

That said, Blue Host is the site we used for Stephanie Studebaker's Campaign. It is very "loaded" with resources and dependability.

8. The owner of godaddy.com ia a fan of "Gitmo."
He removed the post from his blog after a significant backlash. He even went so far as to post a link to it on the front page of godaddy. More info here: http://www.metafilter.com/mefi/42906

23. Godaddy is reliable
...until something goes wrong. They totally deleted one of my sites durng a server upgrade and I never got it back. Godaddy is okay for domain registration and tiny sites. But for sites that one cares about, I would go with a different host - one where I can actually speak to tech support without waiting on hold for an hour.

Sadly, I know many great, secure, helpful hosts, but they are all from the dark side. ;)

6. Buy tubes. Lots and lots of tubes.
That's how the internet works (or so I've heard).

7. I like www.tigertech.net
(which was originally recommended to me by fellow DUer JCMach years ago)

They are cheap, but the customer service is very good and I've never had any problems with it being down.

10. What kind of a page?
Do you want to create your own blog? Or do you want to create a commercial site with various pages for docs, articles, maybe some merch?

Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 04:16 PM by Call Me Wesley
I mean what the content of your website will be. If you're interested with hosting it outside the US, send me a PM. I might have a free slot somewhere. ;)

On edit: Wow, that's an old thread ...

They've got everything, hammers, nails, screws 'n stuff. You can build whatever you want w/ the shit they got there. They might even have some tubes you could use.

22. I use
bravenet.com. They are out of Canada and very reasonable. I presently am webmaster for six websites and use them for each. They have several different options including free hosting. You can get your feet wet by setting up a free site and if you like it splurge and buy a site with them that removes all advertising. Works for me.

Oh, and the guys at bravenet even have a box to check so you can buy them a beer. Good bunch.
