3. I thought of that. "Wait till your father gets home" takes on a creepier meaning

10. single parent here too... I just try to be consistent
inconsistency is a bad policy when it comes to raising kids. They need to know what the rules are and that there will be consistently defined consequences if they break them.

4. we switch it up to keep her on her toes
It's rare to have to play bad cop with our daughter though. She's an easy going fun kid. She's only 6 yrs old though so I expect this to change at any time. ;)

8. Wait until she's 12 and hormonal.
They become decidedly less easy going, and much MUCH less fun.

7. United front most important.
Kids learn 'divide and conquer' early on.

9. We play mediocre psychologist/batshit crazy insurance claims investigator with ours.
It keeps things more interesting as the kids never know what the hell is going on.

15. I can truly appreciate that method..
I find that if you insert enough "crazy parent" into your parenting style, you kids will respect you more.

17. Exactly..
we try to keep our 'overreactions' limited to the inane and entertaining, and reserve the "relaxed-not-the-least-bit-surprised-totally-expected-it" reactions for the big stuff. We don't always succeed, but we do notice that our kids tell us everything.
"Mom...I was the second shooter on the grassy knoll...that's not a problem is it?"

They think we're nuts, and that's the way we like it.

12. We do:
consistently-annoyed cop / usually-mellow-with-the-occasional-psychotic-explosion cop. Works about as well as one might expect. :)

13. Wasn't that the interrogation method used on "Homicide: Life on the Streets?"
That's the kind of tactic I'd like to take if I were a parent, especially if I get to be Pemberton, Andre Braugher's character. And that is one of many reasons I will never be a parent.

14. No we prefer the Stalinist Gulag method
in which we confine them to their rooms for a period of time, take away the toys they like and make them do household chores like clean toilets while supervising them....if we are being really mean we break out a bottle of wine and supervise them to make ourselves feel more powerful.....

16. my girlfriend is soooo going to be the bad cop
She's the perfect bad cop.

I'd be a great good cop.

Women are better for the bad cop role anyway. Your mom angry is much more frightening than your dad angry.
