Anyone been or known any raw foodists? |
|
I checked out a book from the library to learn more about it and frankly, it disturbed me. It seems like you would have to have a lot of time on your hands to grow, find and prepare such a diet. I just don't have that level of obsession.
So, anyone have a take on a raw food diet or those who follow such a lifestyle?

1. I know people who have followed raw food diets (some for years) |
|
They're all very healthy, although the diet does require more time and money than most people have.

raw vegetarian or raw animal + vegetarian?
raw vegetarian aka raw vegan diet is very good as a cleansing diet in the short term, but do not do it for more than a month. They will innundate you with propoganda and the like. It is nonsense.
raw animal+vegan diet is good but you have to be smart about parasites. Raw eggs are always ok, unless you have a weakened immune system. Raw meat is different. Raw fish from saltwater species is ok, but it is better to freeze it at -4 F for a week to kill any parasites.
never eat raw pork.

Raw vegan, that is ... for about four months last year. I lost weight, felt good, and my skin was awesome. But it's hard to be on when you live with someone who likes cooked food and meat. It was a bit expensive, too. You can make it as simple or complicated as you like. We didn't like most of the recipes that tried to mimic cooked foods. We did like some of the gazpacho recipes and desserts, though. And baby coconuts are just about as yummy as anything can be. My favorite lunch was lettuce wraps: Shredded carrots and cucumbers, sprouts, and avocado in a romaine leaf. How hard is that? For a snack, stuff a few medjool dates with a little almond butter and brazil nuts. Serve with apple slices. :9

9. Are you talking about "Raw" by Juliano? |
|
I have that book, it's one of the most beautiful books I've ever seen. It did get me to start eating more raw foods. I keep saying I'm gonna go totally Raw but I'm nowhere near close. I think it's a sustainable diet if you get enough B-12 if you are vegan.
Carol Alt, the former model, also has a really nice book on eating raw, and she started when she was in her late 30's so she has quite a basis for comparison whereas I think Juliano was in his late teens or early 20's when he started so he probably has less experience with processed foods, even though he is a beautiful specimen of human and a testimony for that diet. I believe he is vegetarian. Carol Alt is not and eats meat, fish, etc raw. I don't think I could do that. I also didn't really dig the idea of getting a food dehydrator and having stuff in there for hours at a time, but maybe someday. But I will say that the changes I made helped tremendously...any percentage of raw that you add to your diet and replace processed or cooked food with is gonna help alot, at least in my experience. I could tell a difference in my skin almost immediately from eating more raw stuff. I think you could go about 80% raw and still not have to pay attention to the nutrition aspect like B-12 and all that unless you are already totally vegan. I totally believe in it...as they say, the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.

10. I've been looking into it |
|
...and have been eating significantly more raw food over the past few months. And I like it.
Need to do some more research tho. I'm not sure that I have the discipline to ever go 100% raw, but yeah, I definitely agree that as much raw food as you can reasonably work into your diet will pay off in spades.
