Why do I like local storm coverage so much? |
|
The local news station is doing wall-to-wall coverage on the snow, the inch of ice that is coming, and the road conditions. Shots of cars in ditches, live shots of reporters standing in front of overpasses, lists of event cancellations, five minute dissertations on the difference between "snow," "sleet," and "wintry mix," ... news conferences from DFW airport ... and I feel absolutely COMPELLED to watch every bit of it. Am I just gloating because I don't have to go out? Am I just obsessed with local news? Is it that I enjoy being part of the great urban storm gestalt?
And, more to the point, does anybody else do this, or am I just wacko? :bounce:

the funny thing is that it's like a half inch of ice and some freezing drizzle .... ya'll would doubtless consider this absolutely nothing. ;)

when I lived in Nebraska. I was a weather channel whore.
Now I get to sit back and roll my eyes while the weatherpeople discuss the "BIG BAD RAIN EVENT"...which inevitably turns out to be 10 minutes worth of sprinkles, followed by a cloudless sky. ;)

Mainly because they are so over-the-top about it.
TAKE COVER! A MONSTER STORM IS HEADED TO YOUR AREA. Ha! And it's like, enough snow to make a FOOTPRINT by the end of it. STEAL FOOD, HORDE GAS! IF YOU ARE ELDERLY, YOU WON'T MAKE IT THROUGH THIS STORM. Hee hee. I especially like when they make the most junior reporter on staff go on location to cover the salt pile. "Yes, Jim, it looks like the city has an ample supply of salt to keep our roads safe...for the children." LOL!

9. I love that. The shots in front of all the sanding trucks? |
|
"Yes, Jim, you can see behind me the sanding trucks heading out now to take care of those bridges and overpasses. They ARE icy, so you'd better be careful out there."
What gets me is why anyone leaves the house at all during these things, unless you have to. One year we had like 400 accidents in ONE HOUR.

and waiting for it to hit here! I even bought my Granddaughter a snow suit to play in the snow (will probably be the only time she gets to wear it). I don't know why there are party poopers trying to make us seem like freaks for loving it! :hi:

We usually get it in February or so.
All I know is, it's a great excuse to stay home and plant my happy ass on the couch.

I took a sleet day myself. Just didn't feel like skating 19 miles up I35 You will love this Crispin, I went to Braums last night and bought MILK and filled up my car with GAS before I came home, just in case you know?
Actually, I was out of milk and my car was almost dry. I had decided that if the storm blew in as predicted and I stayed home, I wanted to be prepared to bake these two cakes I need to do before Saturday night. So I did. My freezer has a chocolate pound cake all wrapped in foil and the oven now has the cream cheese pound cake baking away. That's two things off my to do list.
Last night I made two Christmas wreaths; one for the charity auction Saturday and one for my daughter's apartment door. I still have stuff to do tomorrow night but it won't be as hectic since I don't have to bake a cake.
I made chicken soup and my daughter came over with a friend and we ate soup and hung out for a while. It was actually a productive day.

played silly games on my computer and surfed the net all day. LOL
I am just a born procrastinator and any opportunity to do so just fits the bill, but hand me a deadline and I get to work.
Last night I actually had the foresight to warm up my car enough to defrost the front and rear windows so I wouldn't have to do it this morning. It was nice to look out and see the winshield still clean.
on edit: but boy is it cold.

storm coverage. Doesn't matter the time of the year-Katie Horner will cut in and stay on the air "until the storm has ended." Makes for a great drinking game.
During the ice storm a couple of years ago I got good and wasted until the power went out. And spring is something to look forward to around here since Katie goes on a rampage and will stay on the air, nonstop, for 10 hours at a time.
