Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 02:40 PM by Ladyhawk
when it's getting us all killed. Jesus is no more a god than were Zeus, Thor, Mithras or any of the hundreds of gods we've piled on the scrapheap of history. For awhile now I've thought that we all need to get very rational very quickly or we are the ones who will be history. Tolerating delusional thinking is getting us nowhere. Literally.
-“As an atheist, I am angry that we live in a society in which the plain truth cannot be spoken without offending 90% of the population. The plain truth is this: There is no good reason to believe in a personal God; there is no good reason to believe that the Bible, the Koran, or any other book was dictated by an omniscient being; we do not, in any important sense, get our morality from religion; the Bible and the Koran are not, even remotely, the best sources of guidance we have for living in the 21st century; and the belief in God and in the divine provenance of scripture is getting a lot of people killed unnecessarily.” - Sam Harris

62. Hmmm...I keep going back and forth on this issue in my mind. |
|
Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 06:11 PM by Ladyhawk
I believe religion is one of the main factors that has us on the fast track to extinction. Mutual tolerance is lacking and doesn't seem to be working. I credit liberal Christians for pulling the first brick out of my wall of belief, but had they not tacitly enabled the fundamentalists by sanctioning belief in the unprovable, I may have never been indoctrinated in the first place. Maybe religion would have gone the way of the dodo had we been able to openly castigate it.
If god exists, he/she/it certainly doesn't need humans to defend him/her/it. Let's challenge the very idea of the existence of a deity and let the chips fall where they will. By all means, theists, engage in apologetics because the "he/she/it" you're "apologizing" for can never be bothered to show up in person on his/her/its own behalf. At this point in my life, belief seems at best, silly; at worst, dangerous. I look back at my old beliefs and shudder with shame that I could ever have believed in a god.
So, if belief in god is endangering our very existence, my tolerance for "faith" is wearing thin. I keep vacillating between two positions:
1) Tolerate everyone's beliefs. If human beings can't find peace among the religions, maybe we don't deserve a continued existence. I certainly hate it when theists proselytize me. Isn't it hypocritical of me to question their beliefs and try to make them see things my way? If we can't learn to get along we're toast. And it's foolish to question believers. Religion will always exist, so I might as well enjoy the ride, hellish as it's bound to be.
2) Question religionists relentlessly. Engage in rational thinking. Say things that make religionists think. Question, question, question in the dim hope that someday there will be no religion. Image no religion.
No matter which path I choose I'm not going to win friends and influence people because I'm not a closet atheist. The local theists hate me whether or not I question their religion. Maybe it's time to give them a taste of their own medicine.
I guess I'm confused.

I am one of them, and I am very offended by the OP and by all the posts that kick this thread and by the posts that support the mockery of Christianity in the OP. Not by all of the posters, but by their posts. I'll just tell those of you who would like to be my friend this: you've made a mistake, and I hope you won't repeat it. There is a lot of hypocrisy here as well. Posters in this thread may be offended by jokes that mock gays, or Jews, or blacks, or other ethnic groups or any other minority, yet you participate in this.
There are Christians who do not support people like Falwell and other fundamentalists, and the attempted hijacking of the religion by BushCo, you know.

No one is stereotyping christians, no one is saying Christians are bad, and no one is saying anything disrespectful to you. I'm sure Jesus would find this funny, anyways.
The YMCA is where poor young men can go for a place to stay. Jesus would have loved the Y. If he had existed...which he probably did not.

70. I'm offended because the crucifiction is being mocked. |
|
Edited on Tue Dec-05-06 03:11 AM by speedoo
As you may know, to Christians, the crucifiction was Jesus' giving of his life to forgive our sins. So it is central to Christian belief. And I believe that Jesus existed, and that he suffered on the cross, so I'm sure he would not have found this funny. He never found any pleasure in anyone's suffering.. he despised suffering.
The YMCA has nothing to do with this, other than the fact that it happens to be the title of the song being used for the mocking.

72. In this matter, my perspective is what counts, to me. |
|
Just as I reject the activities of Falwell and other "Christians" like him, I find no comfort in other Christians in this thread seeing humor in what I find offensive.
Nobody tells me what to believe or what to think and feel about my beliefs.
It's unfortunate that all the folks who find humor in this did not think of trying to see it from the perspective of Christians who see this as I do. Just as I always think about the perspective of gays, Jews, blacks, and various ethnic and national groups before I participate in anything that might offend them.

85. Actually, I've been thinking about it... |
|
...and if you see it as a mockery of the crucification and that is offensive to you, you obviously have a right to your feelings.
I don't find jokes about bad driving to be funny. To me, they make light of a life and death issue.
However, I don't expect people to refrain from making bad driver jokes, nor do I expect people to consider whether ANYONE might find something offensive before sharing it.
In fact, when I was a young teenager, I petitioned congress to hold a constitutional convention to add an amendment guaranteeing the right to offend. I'm serious.
Personally, I think it's generally a good idea to avoid playing on negative stereotypes. But even then, it's really a case by case thing. I think humor is pretty close to love in conquering all.
But I do want to apologize for implying that you didn't have grounds to be offended. Obviously you have the right to your own feelings and if something resonates to you in a certain way and you express that, it's pointless to challenge that expression--it's personal.
OK, got to get to work now, but I'll check back.
Take Care,
Rene

I'm glad you read my apology. It sometimes takes a while for me to catch on to things, but I usually get there.
I think getting offended is a lot like getting angry. It can be a great indicator for when something is wrong, but it can also get out of control. When my husband gets angry that his band-mate was late with the rent on the practice space, it makes him look more closely at the whole situation and realize that his band-mate is irresponsible and expects to be taken care of, and that my husband has been enabling him and it has to stop. My husband's anger illuminated an issue which needed attention. But when my husband gets angry--to the point of screaming and throwing things across the room--when he stubs his toe or spills his coffee--that's an attitude problem.
I think your feeling of being offended probably is just an indicator of how important your faith is in your life, and your urge to share your values with your community.

79. Why is it OK to mock a majority religion? |
|
The logic of that totally escapes me.

81. i am not even necessarily saying its ok to mock a majority religion |
|
but its very different to mock a powerful majority from a powerless majority. because in real life christians arent opppressed(not as christians: they maybe oppressed for other reasons, like a poor christian can be oppressed by poverty), and can afford to take a joke or even ignore a joke.
however black/gay jokes oppress an already oppressed people. it reinforces negative stereotypes that are already pretty strong etc.

82. I see. And you don't see any hypocrisy in that position? |
|
The hypocrisy being that you take offense at gay jokes, yet participate in a joke that some Christians find offensive.
In this matter I decide whether I can "afford to take a joke" about Christianity. No one decides for me.

83. actually i do see your point. i still dont think its the same thing. but i do see your point. |
|
i just remember living somewhere where i was the majority and thereby found anything thrown at the majority to be less offensive. but you do get to define what you find offensive. so if you do find this offensive, than i apologize for adding to it.

86. I am not offended. My daughter attends a Catholic High School, |
|
looked at this, laughed and said,"That's something my friends and I would do!" ... and it is. And it's funny. That's all.
