USB-powered record player for conversion to MP3 (follow-up)
Somebody the other day was asking about conversion from LP/45/78 to MP3. I just found something that might make this considerably easier. It's sold by a UK company, but it shouldn't matter because it plugs into a USB port. No wondering which hole in your sound card to connect stuff to or anything. Sweet, huh?

price: 119 pounds Sterling (about US$220).

1. Seems to me that if you're going through the trouble of transferring an album...
...you shouldn't save it in a lossy format like mp3. Just my two cents.

2. It's not just for mp3s -
comes with Audacity software (which is pretty good for a free program) which records to the hard disc as .wav files. Whether or not you convert to the dreaded mp3 is optional.

3. If this is the ION device
and it sure looks like it (especially with the ION logo on the front, duh), I've seen this on the internets for as little as $125. And I've already told my sons that I want one. I still have hundreds and hundreds of albums, many of which I really want to digitize.

4. Really? I want one too.

For 125 beans, it's a no-brainer. I'll have to Google up on this. To be fair, the site I found this at specializes in office toys like a USB-powered hamster that runs on his wheel in response to your typing. It's no surprise, therefore, that they'd be over-charging for most of their inventory.

Here it is at Amazon for $149:

5. Here's a Froogle search for you
actually as low as $107 and change, though I can't personally vouch for any of the vendors:

6. I'd probably recommend Numark's USB turntable instead.

No experience with either, but I do know that Numark is known to make a quality product. (I remember asthmaticeog posting about it a while back, too.)

7. THAT's who it was.
Was looking for the thread, thanks.
I do believe asthmaticeog was saying that prosound had it cheaper than where he got it from, too.
