Has White Wolf gotten too greedy? |
|
Hi all,
I'm sure a lot of you know that White Wolf (creators of such great RPGs as Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf: The Apocalypse, Mage, Demon, etc.) recently recalled all their old books to redo and re-release their entire line in a completely new setting and with completely new rules.
My question is aimed at WW fans, both former and current: is this the last straw for you? I attended a con recently, and whenever someone mentioned WW it was with some variation of 'those greedy ' added. The opinion seems to be that WW's new direction is just a way to pry more long green out of the fans' hands, and that they're throwing out a great setting just so they can get everyone to buy the same books all over again. Just about everyone stated that they're not going to touch anything WW does again. (As to how many actually keep their word, well...)
I have to admit, back when I was a WW fan, I got more than little tired of 'completely new editions' coming out every few years, often having completely reworked some of the most basic aspects of the setting in the process. When they finally got up to 3rd Ed of everything, I just gave up.
So -- White Wolf: Greedy, just another publisher, or what?

2. Just following in that fine tradition laid out by Gygax and the fine folks at TSR |
|
What edition is D&D up to now? There just comes a point where the consumer says enough is enough, and refuses to upgrade their game. I did this years ago with D&D, and frankly it was a fine thing to do.
Sounds like WW is just trying to scam more money out of people, and revisions are crap a lot of times:shrug:

Was it even a year between 3rd and 3.5? Jesus, would it have killed them to playtest 3rd before selling the damned thing?

12. I knew it was pretty long...I overguesstimated...:) |
|
I miss playing, but all my friends are either in your hometown, or back in Alaska...most of the gamers up in Joplin are...well, rather...tight, with their game play.

kids usually did that, but its to be expected. We lost a few players for a while, until the kids got old enough to be...well, not attended to every second, and even then...we would get about 2 minutes of gameplay in, before a parent would "stop that! put that down!" and game play would cease for five minutes...
Thats essentially why we turned to magic the gathering, just two players needed...and easier to deal with, than fiddling with books, your character sheet, dice, etc etc...

17. I tried to start a new group early this year |
|
at my home. My wife was away on business and my daughter decided to be a character with new people in the house, so I was chasing her around till well past her bedtime... and, still she wouldn't go to sleep.

15. You're not alone in that regards |

My daughter is almost 4 and I don't think I've played more than a few sessions in that time. Though, part of the reason is that the old DM in my group had 2 hip replacements and will likely be lucky if he can sit up in a chair for extended periods in the future. ;(

16. Warhammer just released their 7th edition, and |
|
they are a few years younger than D&D. Granted, it's a wargame and not an RPG, but it's still the fantasy genre.

and lo and behold they delivered.
The new game line is just that, new games. I'm still playing the old stuff, but some of the new games intrigue me. I like what I've read about Werewolf: The Forsaken and Promethean. I might even get around to playing them someday.

tekken, to tekken 2, to tekken 3...there are upgrades to the gaming system...better rules, better action...
Same with the RPG, like Whitewolf and D and D...I play both(not for a while now), and the new additions to D and D with the realease of 3rd edition, made the game play a bit better IMO...I'm not sure what upgrades/or differences Whitewolf will use...I always thought their rules were pretty damn easy to learn, and easy to remember...unlike D and D I and II...those rules were OUT there...
I started with Second edition D and D, bought all the books...when 3rd edition came out, not enough of my friends wanted to use it...now, thats all they use, and I still don't have a players guide...but nowadays, I hardly ever play, been three years since I played...
I do miss the White wolf novels...the vamps/werewolves were always my favorite novels, and characters to use for gameplay...
I liked the Wendigo for Were, and the Gangrel for Vamp...:D

10. I haven't followed WW for a while |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-30-06 08:20 PM by petersond
but having no mention of the wyrm, weaver, or the gaia is whacked...that makes no sense...but I haven't followed WW since 2000-2001...so there must be a reasoning behind this...
on edit:to clarify

18. Werewolf: The Forsaken is a new game |
|
It has no connection to Werewolf: The Apocalypse. The Apocalypse finally happened, out with the old, in with the new.
