Camera buffs - why are there "digital" filter lenses?

As there are filters for SLR cameras, they also make filters for D-SLR cameras.

It is claimed the D-SLR needs filters made for it because of how the sensor works (vs how film negatives work)

I just tried a film filter lens on my digital camera and saw no major impact.

Are the specially-made-for-digital-camera lenses marketing hype?

1. Hmm couldn't just be because they want to sell you a new filter

rather than let you use the one you had from your old film camera...? :think:

My uncle who is into photography said that most camera makers (but one, which I forget) have made their SLR lenses with different fittings on the digital cameras to those on the film cameras. There is of course no reason for this except forcing you to buy new lenses...

The camera store was adamant the made-for-digital lenses would be differnet. The moment I saw, well, no real difference...

Still, I only needed the UV filter. I tested the circular polarizer and it's working beautifully.
