There is a gun-crazed idiot in my neighborhood, and I hate it!
I realize there probably isn't much I can do about it, as I live in the mountains, near a lake, well outside of city limits. But some assh*le unloads a gun somewhere in the vicinity every single freaking day. I can't tell where b/c noise carries so well over water, etc., but on Thanksgiving it sounded like a freaking fire-fight (must have had some family over to do gun battle with). I don't know if s/he's shooting at a target, at the local's pets, at the Canada geese on the lake, or what. But it just does NOT seem safe - though we're in the country, this is a heavily residential area with homes and people everywhere.

And then this morning at 6:30 there were three rapid shots - boom boom boom! - then another 2 that sounded like they came from somewhere else, then 5 rapid shots further away, then another two that sounded damn near next door. I don't know enough about guns to be able to identify if the shots come from a hand gun, or a rifle or shotgun but the rapid succession makes me think hand gun.

I hate guns, hate hunting, have no problem with target shooting. But I realize all these things are protected possessions/activities, so I'll just have to live with it. But this person's proclivity to shoot A LOT in a neighborhood full of people PISSES ME OFF! And I don't know if it's one person or more, but the afternoon firings seem to be from the same place.

GRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!

1. Here is military firing range (some miles away)

When they are shooting in burst mode it's a bit annoying.

3. I don't like it, but I can deal with it when it's in one place
(or sounds like it is). But when they're ranging all over the neighborhood, I get freaked out and pissed off.

2. Anything to do with hunting season?
If it is year round then yes, you have an idiot in the area. I own guns and target shoot. I DO NOT shoot on my own property though even though there is plenty of land to do so. (15 acres) I have a little respect for my neighbors and do not want to spoil the peace and quiet that we all enjoy around here.

5. the afternoon /evening shooting is year round, every goddamn
day. EVERY DAY. And there are no shooting ranges around here.

What happened this morning - it could be hunting season, I really don't know. Quite possible, as it's the fall and I have a vague notion that fall tends to be hunting season. But why the county thinks it's OK to allow hunting in a populated area when we have the entire freaking SMOKY MOUNTAINS in our backyard is beyond me. The school bus comes through here, for chrissakes. If you drive 10 minutes east or west, you're in dense forest with very few homes, if any.

4. Sounds like perhaps this person is shooting illegally.
One does not hunt in a residential area. I would contact the local authorities and express my concerns. It sounds like it's not the guns you have a problem with but more like where the guns are being used that is the concern.

6. I 've thought about calling the sheriff, just to ask what the
rules and regs are here. I don't really like guns - I've gone to a few shooting ranges just to see if I could "get" why people like them and I just don't really like them, enjoy shooting them, etc. But unless some alien comes along and removes every single weapon on the planet, as well as our ability to make them to kill each other and other creatures, I'll have to live with them. Guns/shooting are a protected possession/activity so I'll live with it. The Constitution, and all that jazz. But I do think their use should be REGULATED or PROHIBITED in certain areas, residential areas being one of them. A certain population density should mean no shooting is allowed. Seems reasonable to me.

But yes - it's the where they're being used that is bothering me most.

7. We just finished regular hunting season but it's blackpowder time now
My hubby participates in both. I guestimate that about 70% of the guys and maybe 30% of the women in this area do at least one, the other or both. And I'm not even counting Moose, Bear, and Bird season. I hear gunshots all around me constantly. I don't hunt but have grown used to it.

As a sidenote (and I might get in trouble for this but) i can't help but wonder if perhaps it's because so many people have all these guns that we have such a low crime rate overall... (although I wouldn't count in this year-it's been a strange one around here) But one recent year (I think 2003) we had the lowest crime rate in the nation yet the highest gun ownership per capita.

In our State it's illegal to discharge a firearm within a certain amount of yards of a road or dwelling. And the hunters seem to respect that as usually the shots are from a distance away. You might want to check with your State or even municipality as there may be some local ordinances that your trigger happy neighbor may be violating. Good Luck. :hi:

9. Another mainer!
Welcome!
Strange year? You must live around Bethel!

I think the cultural homogeneity also has a lot to do with the low crime rate.

8. Where are you?
I'm moving to another state in April and one of my requirements is a strip of land 400 yds long in order to have a 100, 200, 300 and 400 yard range. It's a must have.

13. Just curious...
Are you a new arrival in that neck of the woods?

It's hard to say if any hunting activity taking place or if it's someones backyard shooting set-up. In all likelihood it's an accepted practice in that neck of the woods.

Your description of the situation mkes me wish I lived near someplace like that.
