USC!!! GO TROJANS!! BEAT THE BRUINS!!!!! FIGHT ON!!!!!!!!

Fight On for 'ol SC
Our men Fight On to victory.
Our Alma Mater dear, looks up to you
Fight On and win For 'ol SC
Fight On to victory Fight On!

Palmam qui meruit ferat.
(Let whoever earns the palm bear it.)

All Hail to Alma Mater
To thy glory we sing;
All Hail to Southern California
Loud let thy praises ring;
Where Western sky meets Western sea
Our college stands in majesty;
Sing our love to Alma Mater,
Hail, all hail to thee!

Did I mention I went there? Twice? BA and MA. You gotta cheer the school where you sunk all your money. And there is this little football game we're playing today against the four-letter word from across town... ucla.

That is all.

Carry on.

1. As we used to say in Westwood: You can't spell 'suck' without USC
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 05:23 PM by Richardo
My two favorite teams are UCLA and whoever is playing USC. So today I have ONE favorite team:

BA Political Science, '78

but as a person who supported an away team versus USC this year, I do believe that USC fans, while at the game, are really rude and obnoxious, as a whole.

As for UCLA, their fans may be too, I don't know. Never been to a game against them.

I'm not a Bruin!

I just have no respect for USC after the way I was treated at a game earlier this year. The fans are complete assholes who don't have a bit of football knowledge among them.

That said, I know many people who went to USC who are perfectly fine people. But their fans, at the game, are god-awful.

22. Well, let's see...
I almost got assaulted by a group of "fans" while walking with one friend (we're both girls) in the tailgate area (which was half Husker, half Trojan) before the game.

I saw many Husker fans get punched in the face as they merely walked past the student section gate on their way to their seats.

I spent most of the game deflecting the people around me who were verbally abusive, even though I was high-fiving the little kid behind me whenever USC scored.

And yes, I can expect to be treated with respect. That's how REAL fans treat visitors. The fact that I can't expect that at USC completely proves my point.

Coins, nuts and bolts... stuff that's apparently intended to do real damage.

I think it was Veterans Stadium in Philadelphia (it was Philly; not sure which yard) that had a courtroom of sorts right in the stadium. Fans who got out of control were pinched and hauled to the court, tried and convicted (or not) right then and there. I think that's a hell of a good idea.

32. As I was not there, I can't deny this if you say it happened.
But it does seem a bit violent. But, as there are police all over the place en mass during games, I hope you notified them of what happened to you. I do think there is a difference between the people who sat near you who you found verbally abusive and the student body as a whole. I've met some pretty big asshole fans at sporting events, but I don't assume that everyone who goes to that school or who roots for the team are abusive assholes and they suck... especially in a thread that was intended to simply be fun while following the game. This wasn't my intentional tone. I figured somebody from UCLA would match me here and we'd jab at one another. And the winner would gloat and the loser suck it up and laugh it off.

37. Actually,
the police stepped in and stopped the near assault.

The thing is, we weren't even in the student section. We were in the faculty section! But of course, to get there, we had to walk past the student gate, which is were we witnessed the random throwing of punches.

I don't think that every single USC fan is a total asshole. I never said that. But as a whole, your stadium is a very, very unpleasant place to go as a visitor. And yes I believe that, as a whole, USC fans are horrid.

I also didn't intend to come into the thread and get all negative, but in all honestly, I'm going for UCLA because of how horribly I was treated by USC fans. It's unfortunate if my experience was somehow atypical. I don't know how that could be the case though, since all of this occurred without any provocation on my part.

That said...I would never assume that you specifically are an asshole. Far from it. You're one of my favorite DUers. It's just a shame that other fans of your team have misrepresented you.

26. Do you really take any team rivalry seriously?
We take the UCLA bear and burn it in effigy at a bon fire Thursday before the game. UCLA burns a Tommy Trojan in effigy. We put red dye and bubbles in their fountains. They put blue due and bubbles in ours. We cover Tommy Trojan on campus and have a guard watch because in the past, UCLA students have actually flew over in a helicopter and dropped stuff on our statue. We take chemicals and write our school names in the other ones lawn areas. We go nuts during Troy Week. They go nuts the week before the game, as well. We give one another hell. It's all in fun. Many USC people have friends and family at many different schools that play us. It's in fun.

Notre Dame. Cal. Stanford. There are all kinds of shit the various schools pull on one another. You really can't take it personally or seriously. Hell yea, we're obnoxious. It's letting loose. It's not personal. I had a UCLA fan stand in line behind me for beer one time. When I was paying for my beer, he helped himself to a drink of it. Instead of getting mad, I thought it was hysterical. When his came, the guy behind the counter gave me his beer for a return sip. It was all in fun. All the while, we were totally dogging each other's teams. And it was hysterical.

However, if you're getting visibly mad and insulting people, hell yeah, they're not going to leave you alone. You're now a target. Don't ruin the fun and no one will pick on you.

But, I must just be an asshole without a bit of knowledge when I'm at a game. ;)

When I was in college (juco), folks from the rival school would come over during the week of the Big Game and paint a yellow stripe down the back of the granite statue of Beauregard the Panther.

These days, they probably poison the Gatorade.

30. Read my response to Oeditpus...
It has nothing to do with rivalry. It has to do with almost getting assaulted.

And the people I was sitting next to spent far more time verbally assaulting me than they did watching the game. And then they'd ask me what happened, cuz they missed the play while they were in my face.

If it is acceptable to beat up the other team's fans while they're trying to find their seats, then your definition of good fan behavior and mine are completely different.

When choosing between the two, I must go with UCLA. I am a California partisan, so if USC wins, I will want them to pound the fuck out of Ohio State if it comes to that.

Like most southern CA families, mixed roots are the norm. Nini's uncle played basketball at USC, but her brother went to UCLA.

I am a grad of an out-of-state school, since I didn't live here during my college days. So today's it's UCLA, but tomorrow, it's whoever represents my state in the BCS! :D

Cross town rivalry is the beginning.

If USC had won, they would go to the National Championships. Now, it's the Rose Bowl. UCLA is going to a bowl, but it isn't anything like the National Champs or Rose Bowl, so they had a lot to lose. Their goal was to prevent USC from going to the national Champs, which is exactly what our goal would have been had the tables been turned!

53. I like the BCS
There will always be someone who is unhappy, but overall it does tend to work better than anything else. A playoff system is really out of the question in college football. The main glitch in the BCS seems to be "what happens when you have one undefeated team and a whole bunch of one-loss teams?" The BCS actually addresses that pretty well with the strength of schedule element. Now let's see how the Florida/Arkansas game pans out....if Florida wins big, I imagine they will play Ohio State on January 8. If they barely win or lose, it will be a re-match with Michigan.

And so what? The National Championship should be between the best two teams in the country. Whether or not they have already played that season should not be relevant.

essentially choose which team will play Ohio State, and that's just flat wrong. Michigan was rated #3; the Gaters are #4. After USC's lost, that would make Michigan #2, and Florida, #3 at the most. Thus, #1 Ohio State should play #2 Michigan. But the BCS often throws common sense and logic out the door.

58. that is not how it works
USC's loss drops them out of the picture. Michigan is #2 NOW, but the new standings don't come out until tomorrow. Florida could jump Michigan with a big win over Arkansas(which looks unlikely now). If Florida's game is unimpressive, there is no reason for them to jump Michigan and Michigan will remain #2 and likely be invited to play in the championship game. I don't see the problem at all. You are acting like the BCS is a bunch of boogeymen conspiring in a dark room...it's a system based on the performance and schedules of teams. It works pretty well, unless your team is on the losing end. :-)

59. We will have to agree to disagree, LA Woman
And btw, I don't think the BCS is a "bunch of boogeymen". I just think it sucks. But if you like the system, I have no problem with that. As I said, we will have to agree to disagree about it.

62. I'm with you, SeattleGirl.
It's not personal, just a different preference, whether my team is coming in at number one or number 10 in the Pac 10.

And with that, I'm off to a dinner party... where there will be a UCLA fan... ah, the ribbing I'll have to endure.

61. Unless my team is on the losing end...
... well, there were many years we were no where near the winning end, and I still never heard positive comments regarding the BCS.

No reason to get snippy, it's not a personal attack here.

56. It's not a rematch that is the issue.

And yes, there will always be people who are unhappy, but we simply preferred the old way. I don't see anything particularly great about the BCS, so I see no reason for the switch over, and I haven't met anyone who is really into football (meaning, they are ito the finer points and statistics rather than me, a more casual watcher) who finds it particularly great, but they are much better at going into the details and the finer points.

Edited to add: SeattleGirl made the point very well.

60. There was still a decided National Champion.
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 08:52 PM by Kerrytravelers
USC has been a National Champ in the past. And we'll be there again with the BSC. I just prefer the old way. It's not a huge stake in my life one way or the other, just an opinion.

64. well, yes but it was even more nebulous....
there was no championship game and the pollsters decided who the champion was. Now what we have is a reason to watch more games than just our own team's...now I am interested in lots of games because of how they affect my team. It's awesome. I am sure there are ways it can be improved, but I do like it...

Sorry about USC, btw...
