Poll question: Best Song by Mellencamp
Edited on Sat Dec-02-06 11:52 PM by benny05
But I am throwing out the potential to vote a song for a potential Dem 08 Pres candidate's campaign for primary song (Bayh, Edwards, etc).

I really like "Our Country" (http://www.mellencamp.com/index.php?page=videos) but my favorite for a political campaign is still "Your Life is Now". Our Country reminds me of what Edwards talks about in terms of the haves and have nots, and in addressing the issue of poverty via Katrina, his poverty center, and now his book, Home: the Blueprints of Our Lives, in which all of the proceeds go to Habitat for Humanity and International Rescue Committtee (which is helping folks trying to find their way back home in Uganda, and actually helped in NOLA when our lovely W and his wonderful no-bid contractors kept subcontracting and not much got done to help the folks down in NOLA).

But the song may reasonate in other ways as well.

2. Down & Out in Paradise and Walk Tall

...also other good choices.

Personally, I love "I Need a Lover." But that probably wouldn't be the best choice for a political campaign.

3. I'm a big fan
I think he is easily one of the most under rated songsters of our time.

I voted for Small Town because I just love it. But I also like It All Comes True, Keywest Intermezzo, Dance Naked, Human Wheels.

I think Our Country would be a great 2008 song.

I love the story about Reagan asking for Pink Houses to be a campaign song and John saying NO.

4. For me nothing beats "Ain't Even Done With the Night"
...but that wouldn't be a good campaign song.

6. OTHER! Cuttin' heads
Hey Poppi yea ho
Hey Poppi yea ho
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Lay low proud Poppi
Lay low proud Poppi (shout it out)
He's from the deep south (shout it out)
Pass Christian Mississippi
Where the cane breaks are burnin' every night
Lay low proud Poppi (shout it out)
Chant:
Hey o
Hey o
O Poppi
Hey o
Hey o
Hey Poppi
Hey o
Hey o
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah
Poppi had a wife
And she was black and Poppi was white (shout it out)
Everything was rollin' great (shout it out)
'Til some man called her race a disgrace
Oh no
Chant
Well Poppi went down to the river
To defend the honor of his wife
(somebody's killin' somebody)
Gonna drown the man in the water (shout it out)
And the water was shiny like a new knife
But Poppi stopped at the banks of the Delta
He said this sure ain't worth this man's life
Someday the wind of change
Is gonna blow on through
And put all of these jokers right
C'mon and sing now
Chant
Chuck D Rap:
Papa got a brand new bag
Delta blues got 'em dazed and confused
Came a long way crazy
Seems the abuse
Is racism's baby
It's wild
'Cause I connect the word with pain
Now some smile when they scream the name?
Funny how the times have changed
And the rhymes have changed
But some cat's frame remains the same
Agitating adjective
What gives? die n word die
But I wanna live
Known' all this
Where the word came from
I must be 3 times stupid
And stuck on dumb
If I use it and confuse it
With a term of love
Now popular culture

7. I like
"Hand to Hold on to", "Crumblin' Down", and "Rain on the Scarecrow"- but wouldn't pick any of them as a campaign song, especially the latter! Well, "Hand to Hold on to" might be O.K. "Small Town" would work well for some candidates; I think Edwards used it for his '04 campaign. (I should say, I mostly know Mellencamp's singles, so there are probably some really good songs in his catalog that I haven't heard.)

8. A few favorites by Mellencamp:
Ain't Even Done with the Night, Small Town, Wild Night, and China Girl (not very politically correct, though). Small Town's probably the best for a political campaign, however.

It's on the Dance Naked album. One of my all-time favorite songs ever.

didn't get enough air play, imo. Then again, most really good songs don't.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=g43Zwk-AESQ
Well our hearts beat like thunder
I dont know why they dont explode
You got your hands in my back pockets
And sam cookes singin on the radio
You say that Im the boy who can make it all come true
Well Im tellinya that I dont know if I know what to do

Chorus:
You say thats all right, hold tight
Well I dont even know if Im doin this right
Well all right, hold tight
We can stay out all day or we can run around all night
Well all night, all night
Well its time to go home
And I aint even done with the night

Well I dont know no good come-ons
And I dont know no cool lines
I feel the heat of your frustration
I know its burnin you up deep down inside
You say that Im the boy who can make it all come true
Well Im tellin ya that I dont know if I know what to do
