Just in time for holiday feasting: The Lap-Band.
The Minimally Invasive Procedure
During the procedure, surgeons usually use
laparoscopic techniques(making tiny incisions rather than a large incision and inserting long-shafted instruments through “ports”), to wrap the LAP-BAND® System around the patient’s stomach. A narrow camera is passed through a port so the surgeon can view the operative site on a nearby video monitor. Like a wristwatch, the band is fastened around the upper stomach to create the new stomach pouch that limits and controls the amount of food you eat. The band is then locked securely in a ring around the stomach.

Since there is no stomach cutting, stapling, orgastrointestinal re-routinginvolved in the LAP-BAND® System
procedure, it is considered the safest, least invasive, and least traumatic of allweight-loss surgeries. The laparoscopic approach to the surgery also has the advantages of reduced post-operative pain, shortened hospital stay, and quicker recovery. If for any reason the LAP-BAND® System needs to be removed, the stomach generally returns to its original form.

Holy Pig-Out, Batman!
Be sure and watch the procedure animation.

Happy Hollandaise, y'all.

5. I hope you do
well with your 1500 cal diet. Some people have no choice but to undergo drastic measures to lose weight. The lap band is one of the least invasive procedures and often doesn't work for the individual. There have been a number of successes though.

Speaking as someone who has had bariatric surgery (biliopancreatic diversion with a duodenal switch)I guess I don't find any humor in 'fat jokes' 'gastric bypass jokes' etc. I thought perhaps you were considering the procedure for yourself or knew of someone who'd had it.

As I said, I wish you all the best in your diet.

20. Lemme see... I said "Holy Pig-Out Batman..."
I didn't say 'fat' anywhere.
Did I make a joke about fat people?
No. Actually, it was a comment about the lengths people would go to to lose weight besides just not eating as much.

Hold it.
Are you being SERIOUS?
YES! I believe you are.

Sorry.
I call SERIOUSNESS!

2. I realize you think you're making a joke
There's actually quite a pre-op process to qualify for Lap-Band surgery, one of which is the determination by a doctor it's impossible for the patient to lose weight using typically accepted (and less invasive) methods.

With the attitudes towards the fat exhibited both here and in society at large, (pun not intended) no wonder some people are so desperate to lose weight that they'll undergo a procedure that not only renders them unable to eat more than a few ounces at a time for the rest of their lives, they'll also have to give up the ability to have even one alcoholic drink as well. One can't drink with either a Lap-Band or gastric bypass because of the increased effect on the liver.

6. Oh, I see
I must have missed that part. After all, we all know that it's okay to make broad brush generalizations about others in the guise of making a joke. It's the Lounge.

8. I had Weight Loss Surgery 1 Year Ago - Down 120 lbs.!
I chose the Duodenal Switch surgery - the lap band is minimally invasive but doesn't have as good a track record for percentage of excess weight lost and kept off.

My surgery was the best thing I ever did for myself!!!

12. thanks JulieRB!
I truly feel this was a lifesaver for me and for many people out there.
There are so many surgeries now and I can't stress enough that people "NEED" to do their research. Find a surgery that works, know all the ins and outs. Research your surgeon. It took me 3 years to decide on which surgery and which surgeon to go with. I have no regrets at all.

13. friend at work had it, and is so much healthier now
still heavy, but now she can WALK to work, can climb stairs without losing her breath, and is out of the danger zone (for now) blood-sugar-wise. It's been a big boost to her overall health and quality of life.

Hope you're healthier, too, AA

15. Evidently I have offended 3 or 4 folks here.
Part of me says that I wouldn't intentionally offend anyone, ever.

But, the darker side says that possibly some of us are a bit thin skinned.
And seek ways to be offended.
I dunno.

I have, in the past year, gone from being 'clinically obese' (by medical definition), to merely being overweight.
I am still working on it. I'd like to be into what most medical authorities say is the 'norm' or 'acceptable average' for my height and age.

I have accomplished this amazing feat by NOT EATING AS MUCH AS I USED TO.
Not by invasive surgery.
Not by non-invasive surgery.
Not by magic pills or or magic supplements or magic grapefruit diets or magic high protein diets or magic low fat diets or magic low carb diets or magic bullets or magic ANYTHING.

Unless you have a VERY rare glandular condition, if you consume fewer calories than you ingest, you will lose weight.

"One thing that is not well-recognized is the fact that weight loss itself is not a particularly difficult problem. If a human being is put on an 800 or 1000 calorie diet, they lose weight. There do not appear to be a large number of people who have undesirable responses to a 1000 calorie diet that prevents them from losing weight: the few claims that have been investigated have not held up to scrutiny. In other words, there are no people who are totally resistant to weight loss."
http://www.diagnose-me.com/cond/C305705.html

God, I'm GORGING myself
I'm on a 1500 calorie diet.
:eyes:

The 'secret' is eating LESS.
For many of us, this isn't easy.
I can tell you some things that have helped me.
They may help you too.

But, in the meantime, how about not getting all 'serious' on me about a post that was just meant to show how ridiculous the lengths some of the American public will go to to avoid personal responsibility and take the 'easy' way out.

Thanks.
trof

19. I was quite willing to take this last post of yours at face value .. and
I still congratulate you on your weight loss success.

BUT ...

where the hell do you get off saying ...

...how ridiculous the lengths some of the American public will go to to avoid personal responsibility and take the 'easy' way out.

There was NOTHING easy about the surgery, nothing easy about making the decision to have surgery. Nothing easy about trying with everything I had to lose the weight on my own even with Dr's supervision.

Your pompous attitude just voided your so called apology upthread.

21. Ok. I give up. You win.
I'm going to matcom's and fix a stiff drink.

I'll tell the mods to delete this thread.
Woops, sorry.
I'll ASK them to.

There is no more lightheartedness in the lounge.
No more whimsy and no poking fun at the ridiculousness of the American animal.
It's as serious as GD.

I accept that.
I'll miss the place.
Oh God, and Skittles' KICKING ASS.

What the hell.
Sooner or later we have to grow up and become...

22. Why don't we just pass around the kids' Ritalin or other
ADHD contolled substance med. Then after we have a few drinks we can take all the food to the homeless shelter and still squeeze into our hiphugger jeans with no spillage over the the top.
