From the matcom newsdesk: Sorority girls trash campus newspapers at university
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 01:56 PM by Maddy McCall
Chi Omegas at a Mississippi university dress in sorority tees and upside-down visors, and steal campus newspapers to hide embarrassing article. Unfortunately, the campus has security cameras everywhere, and they are busted--and this begs the question. Now who's embarrassed?

The article that spurred the theft: "Playboy arrives for 'girls of Conference USA photo shoot'" http://www.studentprintz.com/home/index.cfm?event=displayArticle&ustory_id=716f0967-4de0-4f0a-9a61-7698d96a7f51

Website of the offending chapter of Chi Omega: http://orca.st.usm.edu/~gregg/site/index.html

The results of the Chi-O's criminal activity:

"...a few weeks ago, several members of a sorority at the University of Southern Mississippi, for reasons known only to them, scooped up whatever papers they could find - perhaps as many as 4,000 - of that day's Student Printz, which had a story on USM students auditioning for a Conference USA Playboy issue.

The nitwits were identified by video camera, and will have to pay $750 in restitution to the Printz, apologize and perform community service.

3. Possible reason
The newspaper identified a member who is quoted to objecting to the audtions.
On the online version, the correction says that she was a former member.
They must have thought that it was embarssing to have a member who objected to women modeling for Playboy.
I wonder if she really was a former member when they interviewed her or if her former membership was based on a disagreement between her and the sorority over this issue.

6. Two reasons this happens:
1. Student publications are almost always free, so stealing them doesn't seem like stealing.

2. Student publications are rarely seen as "real newspapers."

7. The frats at U of Alabama
used to steal the Crimson and White every TIME there was something they construed as offensive.
