Does anyone really care what Gwenyth Paltrow really thinks??? |
|
She named her kid Apple, she's rich and has been since childhood. I really don't think she socializes much with middle class people's ... So, maybe she thinks the uppercrust of England has a few more brains than our Hollywood culture.. I don't know and I don't care.. Report the news people, what one woman said (who by the way I have never found attractive or an in-person to try to resemble), is like me saying something quick without really thinking about it.... Shit happens and it happens for everyone.

than Americans... I've seen this issue pop a couple of times today on the board.. but I didn't really pay any atten... then they had a specialist come in on MSNBC to analyze the short little bit about this phrase and then proceeded to compare her to the Dixie Chicks and then the MSNBC talking head said it was worse because she bi-partisanly slammed every American.
I say who cares? Do you know how many times I've said I prefer a European country to this one on this board... Anyone who has travelled usually does prefer Europe to America.. so I call b.s. and say something else really important is happening and they want the distraction with more bubble talk.

Did you just see/hear the news reports featuring on-the-street interviews with average Americans who couldn't answer basic questions about our country and form of government that are asked on the new citizenship test? It's really appalling and embarassing and speaks volumes about where we put our priorities as a society.

I work in Education. I'll be the first one to say that I really don't educate children as much as I am a police officer, social worker, referee for parents and general therapist. I can not believe that America cares so little for Education, but clearly, intelligence isn't rewarded- look at our "leader."
Often, when considering children, we've thought about leaving simply for the education level alone.

That's what I do. I don't wait for the school to teach my son squat - because IF they do, it's generally from an imperical viewpoint, historically speaking. For example, he came home and told me his teacher said Texas was the largest state. I said that was WRONG - it was Alaska and I showed it to him on his Leap Frog map (that gives miles, etc.). They also call Native Americans, "Indians," which confuses my son as we have Indian (from India) friends.
How can a second-grade teacher not know that Alaska is the largest state or that, in a multi-cultural society, "Indian" for the Native Americans who dined with the Pilgrims isn't proper terminology anymore?

I worked in a British pub in Southern California that was a hang out for ex-pat Brits, and Brit airplane crews on layover. The level of conversation was always witty, substantial and well informed, even from those with Cockney accents that would indicate a lower class. One of my favorite customers was an expert on Queen Victoria and he entertained me with stories about her that we didn't get in our history books.
In the other bars I worked in with an American clientele, the conversation was banal, usually about sports and I was amazed at the ignorance of current events. The joking was usually crude and not witty at all.
There is a difference.

I don't think Americans are inherently dumber than the British, or anyone else for that matter. I just think as a society we tend to be a LOT lazier in developing knowledge and intellect of the world around us. I think many Americans are all too content with being spoon fed 30-second sound byte tidbits of information. There's no in-depth exploration of ideas and issues. We are a society of lazy dullards (except, of course, those of us here at DU :-) ).

Well, that would be something I would disagree with. But she has the right to speak her mind.
The Dixie Chicks are celebrities. They speak out on various issues all the time. And they're lionized around here. Rightfully so.
One's right of freedom of speech doesn't automatically expire just because they win an Academy Award.

I have no interest in her work. I have only heard one of her songs, "Whoops, I Did it Again."
I know all about her and I don't know why I do. I don't care about her. I didn't even get a woody when I saw her privates.
How is it that this stuff is so ubiquitous that even people who are not interested have this information?

They have managed to merge "Hollywood" and "Democratic" in the minds of many people. Thus, whenever a star says something stupid, they get to attack it as indicative of how the "liberal Democrats" think.
Of course, in reality, we don't know how Paltrow votes. And we DO know that she holds no position in the Democratic Party. But none of that matters to the "dittohead" crowd.
