1. Bertha Katzenengel
Bertha has so many wonderful qualities. She's compassionate, loyal, kind, talented, and principled. She has a fabulous sense of humor, too. I fell in love with her for all those qualities, and one more. Bertha is one of the most intelligent and articulate people I've ever known. I fell in love with her because of the totality of who she is, but I was initially attracted by her intelligence.

We met in 1999; she moved east in 2000 and we've been apart very little since then. I love her so deeply that I cannot remember when I didn't love her. I am a lucky woman.

18. I Forgot One Very Important Thing
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 05:29 PM by Mrs. Venation
Bertha loves baseball. I love baseball. We get through the winter months in anticipation of the February date when pitchers and catchers report for spring training.

It rocks beyond belief to have someone beside me at the ball park who isn't there just for the beer and hot dogs. Bertha knows a ton of stuff about baseball. We love the same teams, despise the same teams, and we were both thrilled when the Cards won the WS this year, and especially thrilled when David Eckstein won the WS MVP.

Baseball rocks out loud!

Bertha rocks my world.

Bertha likes this one best:

21. Oh, that second picture. So sweet.
There is nothing better in life than sharing the little things. A seat next to you at a game, a laugh, a quiet moment.

Your happiness makes me happy. :D It is so refreshing to see people truly in love. to both of you.

I have a new someone special in my life that makes me feel the way you described. Just knowing he is there makes my world a little gentler.

9. His compassion is coupled with a need to act. He's a thinker and an activist when too many people
are only one. In a position of relative societal power as a straight white guy with a professional job he could easily disregard the struggles of others, at times doing so would be advantageous, and it never occurs to him to do so.

Oh, and he has a wonderfully expressive voice and the most amazing eyes but I didn't know those things when I first admired him.

Also, it's really really endearing when he starts babytalking the dogs while talking to me. It just melts me every time.

24. All of the holes inside of me....
Edited on Sun Dec-03-06 05:59 PM by oktoberain
She fills them and makes the emptiness go away
Where I am weak and tend to anger
She is strong and patient enough for two

I am ethereal and wispy and moonlight and silver
She is daylight, birdsong, laughter, and warmth
Together we are sun and shadow, mist and clarity
Eternity and a single moment, intertwined

Love is such a weak word for what we have.
Anyone who felt this and considered it
anything but holy, rapturous, and sacred
would be the true abomination.

The love that dares not speak its name?
I'd shout my love from every peak
Across and beneath every heaving wave
And into the depths of timeless space

I could forgive her any transgression
As she forgives so many of mine
This is the essence of life, I think
To love and be loved, for no other end

25. He absolutely adores his cat and isn't afraid to show it
This is a tall, handsome, masculine carpenter we're talking about but when he mentions his cat (which he does frequently), his whole face lights up with devotion. It's adorable and the first thing I noticed about him. I figured if a guy could be so open and honest about his love for his kitty, how wonderfully must he treat a woman?

And I was right. :loveya:

31. Her weird-ass sense of humor...
...her amazing mind that comes up with the most fascinating stuff, faster than I can keep up. Her kindness. Her devotion to our animal babies. Her liberal heart. The fact that we've never had a fight.

Much of the other stuff can't be shared in the context of this board. Suffice to say that after eleven-and-a-half years, she still makes my heart flutter. It's freakin' magic.

He's kind to small fuzzy creatures.

He loves me even when I'm unloveable.

When I'm sick he'll search all over town for cough syrup at 2 in the morning and not even complain.

He's smart and interested in the world around him.

He has green eyes and fuzzy hair and wears little round glasses when he reads. I love that.

He's sweet, intelligent, funny, handsome, patient, caring, he loves me so unconditionally, and he just said he has a real problem with the shrimp teriyaki stir-fry I fixed him for dinner...it was so good he doesn't think he can enjoy eating out in a Chinese restaurant again.

And, as I said before when this was asked the last time, he never fails to come near me or pass me in a room without reaching out and touching me,

I loves him so much!

38. He. Makes. Me. Laugh.
A lot. I mean seriously. reprehensor can be serious when he needs to be (and is more serious about love than anyone I've been with before), but the man sends me into giggles at least 100 times a day. He makes up funny little songs about the cat, and the dog, and does tons of little voices that keep me entertained. Most couples have little jokes between them, but we have a MILLION.

We swore when we got together cyberly that we were going to make this the best thing that had ever happened to both of us, and we've always stuck by that. We went through a LOT to be together-- the whole immigration process, and spending a year apart before he could move down.

He has dealt with even more in the course of the whole "in sickness and in health" thing-- my emergency surgery for girlie problems last March, my MS diagnosis-- and he's never flinched. He helps me with my shots-- he is my ROCK.

He's gorgeous, and passionate, and so thoughtful. He does hundreds of sweet things every day to keep our collective running smooth. I ADORE him.

40. My turn to tell you about my husband...
I found him, or he found me on the internet. From the start he made me laugh. I knew that if and when we met we would 'feel just right'. I had no idea of how JUST right we were for each other. He knows me better than I know myself. He loved me fat and thin. My heart and my soul are nourished because of this man's love for me. A quick glance across the room from him brings a radiant smile to my face. He loves me, it's clear as day. He awakens in the morning and says my name. The last thing at night before we sleep he says my name and tells me how much he loves me.
He cherishes our time together, he loves his son and my son, his stepson.
He's a grandfather before he's ready to be one :)

He has a passion for his country. His heart breaks when we speak of the atrocities that are going on in this world. He yearns to clean up the messes we humans have made. He speaks passionately about what America used to be and can be again. He's lost a lot of faith in his fellow man and that hurts him.

Above all else, the last almost 7 years with this man have been so very special. I pray with all my soul that we have MANY more together.

I wish all of you the happiness and deep abiding love that I have found.

all because of the internets too :)

was always very loving and supportive early on in our marriage. I felt comfortable with her, and she with me. Then she followed me to grad school and we lived together a few years before we married. It's not like we had any lack of clarity about who we were together.

Now, things are rockier and I don't know where they are going, but things do change over time. I can't say I know how that happens, but it does and it happens all the time.

57. I don't even know where to begin
He always puts me first. Since I've been sick we've been making this super-healthy vegetable juice concoction and he always prepares it for me and cleans the juicer. He takes me to all of my doctor's appointments, cleans the house, cooks, does the laundry. He didn't sign on for this when we got together.

I love the way he loves animals and how kind he is to my parents, how he insisted on going with them when they had to rush their terminally ill cat to the emergency vet tonight. He just is a kind soul and he is my best friend in the whole world and I love him with all of my heart. I don't know what I would do without him.

58. I fell in love with her because she made me happy.
After a year of not feeling like I could be happy, she was such a breath of fresh air. She knows so much about so many things and is never unable to make conversation about just about anything. She indulges me in my weird fascinations (medieval and Japanese history, history of Christianity, bad movies) and is always there when I need her. She is such a good person and wants to help everyone in the universe out, and is trying so hard to. She is so wonderful with animals and children, the former we have plenty of and the latter we look forward to having. She's the best person I've ever met, and I am honored to be hers. :)

65. Well, he's 6'2 with eyes of blue
Still very handsome and well built after 17 yrs :-) Plus, he's a hard worker with very good, down to earth common sense, which balances out my abstract style and tendency toward impulsiveness.

His most endearing trait however is his sincere wish for those he loves (me included of course) to be happy. He always does whatever is in his power to make that happen. I'm so lucky to have him in my life! :-)

What a great question auntAgonist...it makes us think about all that we should be greatful for!

66. I love Mr. Youthere because..
In NO particular order:

1. He met my family and still married me.
2. He plays Barbies, Beauty shop and tea party with our daughters and looks macho doing it.
3. He'll go to the store just for tampons.
4. He brings me chocolate, flowers and will do the dishes for no reason.
5. When I am sick he makes really bad soup for me, and he has a cup of awful coffee waiting for me every morning.
6. After almost twenty years of marriage, he still holds my hand, the door for me, AND he touches my face when he kisses me.
7. He has seen me sitting on the toilet naked, and still wants to share a bed with me.
8. He tells me I'm beautiful-even when I have the flu.
9. He doesn't believe our son will ever be too old to be hugged and kissed by his father.
10. He loves me completely, in spite of me, and so much more than I deserve sometimes.
11. After almost 20 years married, he still makes me shiver.
12. He always knows when to try to "fix" things and when to just hold me.

My heart bows to him.

Good for you!

Ummm... he wouldn't happen to have a single twin brother, would he? : crosses fingers:

No? You wouldn't mind if I cloned him then, would you? I'll just need a swab from his cheek, a petri dish and a little electricity. I think. Maybe a pinch of sugar would help things along...

69. Everything...
her loyalty, her wisdom, truth...her strength to stand up to the injustice that she see's. I love her hardheadedness, her traits for pure perfection in all she does, what I mean by this, is that she has to have everything done right, to her own standards, and if it doesn't reach that standard, oh boy, watch out. I just love that trait of hers, its...entertaining to say the least...:D

The thing I love the most, is that she loves me...that she loves a tired old s.o.b like myself...:D

77. A list of silly little things that are kind of big if you think about them...
The way he rocked my daughter to sleep in his arms the first time he met her...

The goofy, nervous way he asked me to marry him (too long to write here)...

That he goes to the store (this manly man) and picks up pads and all other manner of girls stuff without blinking.

The way he treats his friends...

The way he looked on our wedding day... all nervous and upset with himself because he forgot to look at me at the beginning of our vows.

I admit...the way he treats his mother...

That he talks to me...

That he trusted me enough to lay his head in my lap and cry the night his father died.

That's just a start.

BUT, I'll be honest there are days when I have to conjur all of these things up in my head and think about them... Those days when I want to pack it all in

85. So many things but let me tell you where and how I met her
You may have heard of the local college town around here called Ann Arbor(aka A2). Well every year A2 has this thing called the Hash Bash. Basically it was a day where the marijuana laws were relaxed. Everyone would show up and light up or protest or demonstrate etc. Now I am a supporter of legalization but not an advocate of doing drugs. So I was interested in going to support the day and such. Plus I had just found out about something called Animania going on campus later on that day. Animania was basically a group that got together to watch Anime (japanese animation series). This was long before it became popular in the states.

This is where I met her. At an anime convention during the Hash Bash in Ann Arbor. I would later find out that she was an atheist, a double major (music and biology) and a Unitarian Universalist as well as a liberal. When you are a liberal atheist geek and you meet a female liberal atheist geek you celebrate.

90. I met a gruff ol' mountain woman in 1999, and soon learned
that under the gruff, she's just a soft pile of fluff. But don't tell her I told you so.

Mrs. Venation has been a coal miner, a bodyguard to battered women, and a caregiver to profoundly retarded adults. This is not the type of person imagined when one thinks of "a soft pile of fluff." But it's true, and I've got the gentle life to prove it.

I'm not the only person she's in love with, y'know. She's crazy in love with her great nephew, Braden Nikolas. And I'm pretty sure she's in love with my youngest nephew. She's in love with her family and mine -- in fact, she never wavered in accepting my entire dysfunctional, hilarious clan.

She is in love with four places (that I know of) on earth: Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Coastal Southern California. Alaska. And the Galapagos Islands (although she's never been there).

She loves animals like no one I've ever seen. She is just tickled to death by critters' ears. I swear whenever she sees an animal that's the first thing she looks at, and more often than not, she'll squeal, "Lookit 'is EARS!"

Imagine my surprise when I learned that Mrs. V. likes Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood, Ralph Stanley . . . and The Who, and Ella Fitzgerald, and Giuseppe Verdi. Here's a hillbilly who literally weeps over opera . . . eh, it's prob'ly just the loss of the banjos. ;)

Mrs. V. disabused me of a prejudice I didn't know I had. We'd corresponded for a long time before we ever spoke on the phone. I'd come to know a sophisticated, intelligent woman who could write well and make me think and laugh. I knew she was from Tennessee, but the first time we spoke on the phone and I heard that accent, I instantly thought, "she's a hick?!" Just as instantly I was ashamed, and in the space of five seconds I learned I'd been a bigot toward Southerners and never would be again.

She's captivated by young children. Her face lights up when she sees a kid playing or laughing or just walking or sitting. And babies! She fusses over each one of them as if it were the most special baby on earth -- which, she'll tell you right quick, it is. She even has something positive to say about ugly babies: "Aww, idn't it precious!"

Mrs. V. is fiercely loyal to her friends and family. She would fight a circle saw for me and for any member of her family or mine, and she'd do it for her friends, too. She's a follower of Christ, and believes what he said: "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."

Now: let's see . . . what do I love about her? ;)

She grew up in Tennessee. I grew up in California. It's an amazing universe that sees two people from different sides of the continent fall in love without ever having been side by side. We're right at home in Maryland and very much in love. Mrs. V. is the love of my life, and I'm not worthy of her.

(and she laughs while planting tomatoes!)

PS That "loss of the banjos" line is Brett Butler's -- another erudite, gorgeous hillbilly.

94. Let's see. She's generous. She's extremely kind. She's extremely ethical.
She's hard working. She's smart. She's interesting. She's just. She's an excellent mother, an excellent friend. She's forgiving. She's tolerant. She's loyal. She is trustworthy.

Our (heh, heh) private time is transcendent.

She works hard to treat others with respect. She teaches; the touches; she helps.

Oh yeah, she's hot looking too. Believe it or not, the first thing that drew me to her was not all the fine qualities listed above but how she looked.

Believe me, I don't deserve her. I could never be good enough for her, never be worthy and the only reason I can account for having her is that I know this. It is unjust that someone so fine is wasted on me.
