RENT - the Musical - a strange request
Hi guys,

This is going to sound like a really odd request. I live here in Sydney, Australia, as some of you know, and in my spare time I produce and direct plays and musicals. Some of the shows I've done have been 12 Angry Men, Noises Off, I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change, Urinetown, Closer, and RENT.

I staged RENT for 12 shows in August this year and in a review by Sydney Stage was referred to as having incredible "testicular magnitude" to put on such an ambitious and exciting production. All 12 shows sold out and the show was something of a phenomenon in the local community. It was not a professional show, however, insofar as I put it on for $30,000 and not 5 million.

Anyway, there's a website called Aussietheatre.com (used to be called BroadwayAustralia, which i think was way better) that gives out awards each year. ONE of their awards is for the category "Best Amateur or Semi-Professional Production" - I won this award for producing "Urinetown" last year. I believe RENT was far superior to "Urinetown" and deserves to be nominated and deserves to win.

HOWEVER, the guy who edits the Aussietheatre website couldn't come to the show and thus is unlikely to nominate it himself. HOWEVER the nominations are partially open to the public.

This is a call to action on behalf of, well, me. The show REALLY deserves to be nominated, people said it changed their lives. It was really quite something. But I don't have a chance of it getting nominated unless people actually write in and nominate it.

ALL YOU HAVE TO DO is send an email to awards@aussietheatre.com and just write

"Best Amateur or Semi-Professional production: RENT (Canned Laughter) – 2 points"

THAT’S ALL you have to do. Can you please please please please pass this along and get your friends and colleagues (within reason) to do it?

I would be soooooooooo unbelievably grateful if you guys could do this. It would mean the world to me. And believe me, the show really was incredible - you're not voting for a Turkey. If you want to read more about the show when we did it, go to www. cannedlaughter.com.au/rent

In the mean time, here are some photos from our production.

Thank you in advance. I can't tell you how happy me and the cast and crew and all the people who helped out on the show (not to mention the massive audiences!) will be if this happens. It will take you only ten seconds but will bring happiness to others that will last a lifetime. And if you feel bad about it because you haven't seen it, don't - you're only voting for it to get nominated, not necessarily to win. (Though I hope they'll deem it worthy after the nominations are announced!) :)

Thank you thank you thank you! :)

Josh

1. I'll do it right now.
I'd hate to be responsible for others not experiencing a lifetime of happiness.

I'm going back and forth between DU and my piano.

9. Now I'm Trying To Picture That
do you use a laptop, or a desktop, and is it right by the piano?

or are you running from the piano to the computer? or ....

I do have an EXCELLENT sense of humor as a matter of fact!

"I'd hate to be responsible for others not experiencing a lifetime of happiness."

That just cracked me up!

but I think you are kind of funny (in the best way) already!

10. Big livingroom. A desk in one corner, my chaise next
to it where I use my laptop. My piano is ten steps away. And this is how I DU, almost always, except tonight I'm playing for fun and not practicing.

I know you have a good sense of humor, whether or not you laugh at me :P

11. Laughter Is A Good Thing
I'd rather laugh with you, but if need be, I'll laugh at your sense of humor, not you

What do you play for fun?
:D

12. Silly stuff. Some Broadway tunes,
popular music I like, standards, and lots of classical but for fun, Bach. Play it as it's written and it's complicated but boring. Mess around with it and it's beautiful. But tonight, English folk songs. "Jonny Drowned in the Sea" "Good Queen Jane" and other tear jerkers. haha.

14. I Was Going To
I moved things into the guest room

caught sarcasm, anger, and I'm sure justifiable feelings as well

So I just didn't feel like doing anything but this.
Talked to my sister for a while too

I'm doing good to be sitting here posting without a knife in my back

It is just the reality of the moment that has caught her off guard. I don't think she thought I was going to even do that. She just said as much, though not like that.

She was mad at me about something else too. I'll PM ya.

And now, to bed. Goodnight, SPK. Oh my gawd I just realized why that sounds so familiar: my favorite candy, Sour Patch Kids. My sister calls them SPKs.

Nighty night.
