So I was at the coffee shop today... |
|
looking over my options. My body doesn't handle coffee well, but if it's mixed with other goodies, it's a-okay.
Anyway, today the coffee shop offered a few specialty Christmas coffees: gingerbread, etc. They offer several others that are sugar free, so I asked if the holiday specials were also available sugar free.
"No, I'm afraid not."
So I began scanning the menu for an alternative. Until I hear this from one of the coffee chicks:
"You look great, so I don't think you really need sugar free."
It took me back for a second... I thanked her for the compliment, of course, but after a while I somewhat detested the physical assessment in comparison to my coffee choice. "Hey," I wanted to tell her, "I look like this BECAUSE I get it sugar free! Otherwise, it ain't easy keeping the weight off!"
I'm very sure the young lady didn't mean anything insulting, but something about it rubbed me the wrong way. Why in the world would that be?

1. My dear Writer......... |
|
My take on it is that you might have felt that she was making light of your concerns.....
She really has no idea how hard you work to stay slim.......
So her remark, while it sounded flip, was just her way to handle the situation, and try to sell you something sweet at the same time......

2. I've always had my figure pointed out to me... |
|
and even if it were a kind statement, I never enjoyed having a light shined on me like that. Maybe I felt that my privacy was invaded somehow? I dunno...

3. Two reasons, I'd guess. |
|
One: you'd just been visually felt up.
Two: She was usurping your choice-making power.
Flattering but intrusive and probably a little uncomfortable for you. I bet she meant no harm but you know what they say about good intentions.

I like the "visually felt up" assessment, yes.
And welcome to DU! :hi:

5. It's just always a good idea not to comment on the way people |
|
look unless you know them.
