Every character was a ridiculous cliche.

Brooding teenager, wacky grandpa, precocious youngster, etc.

The whole point of the movie is mock those cliches. It is a film that pokes fun at the delusional way Americans see ourselves and our society. Those cliches were written with purpose.

I'm a writer of dark comedies myself. Love them.
