My husband just broke my heart :^(
Edited on Mon Dec-04-06 11:53 AM by GreenPartyVoter
He's involved in the local cub scout pack and told me he heard that another pack in the state was participating in a parade and one of their little scouts fell of the flatbed and was run over and crushed to death.

Turns out he was a 9 yo and it happened in NH, but it took place a day after a 3 yo girl here in Maine did the same thing. She's still hanging in there, though.

Grief counselors help children after classmate killed in parade

December 4, 2006

GREENLAND, N.H. --Counselors were available at an elementary school Monday
to help children cope with the death of a classmate who was run over by a float
in the Portsmouth holiday parade.

Police weren't releasing the name of the 9-year-old boy, but others identified him as
Thomas Fogarty, a pupil at Greenland Central School.

Police were investigating the accident, which occurred about 6:15 p.m. Saturday.
Witnesses gave conflicting accounts, but some said Fogarty was sitting on the
Cub Scout float along with 15 to 20 other boys when it hit a bump and he fell off,
in the path of the wheels.

The trailer, decorated with giant cereal boxes, was being pulled by a pickup truck
driven by a parent. Police declined to identify the driver. A man who watched the
parade while taking a break from his restaurant job said Fogarty sat with his legs
dangling over the side of the trailer, and that the float had no safety rail.

8. Dammit.
Carelessness on the part of the parents. There should have been at least three parents walking on each side of the float to keep the kids safe. And no safety rails? Who on earth would put a float in a parade without safety rails?

Terrible and avoidable. :(

I can't begin to know (and honestly hope never to be able to know) what those families are going through.
