Update on Mom's Brain Surgery, for anyone who wants to know
Ok, Mom's brain surgery is on Weds. Sniffa and I are going to be there for the surgery, then overnight, and we should be able to take her home the next day. My dad is going to stay at the VA hospital about 20 miles away from home for a week while she recovers for 7 days.

And there's your update :)

7. I hope so
It's one of the most common brain surgeries, so I'm not overly worried. And my dad almost dies about 3x a year due to infections/surgeries, so this is kinda mellow, comparatively :)

What kind of surgery is she having, bi?
My mom had a golfball sized tumor removed from the center of her brain a few years ago, so I've been through something similar if you'd like to know what to expect.

Sorry you have to go through it - it's really scary, I know.

5. Shunt for Hydrocephalus
But she has a whole mess of other symptoms that the Neuros think are being caused by something else, even though they can't figure it out, a year later...sigh. So hopefully we'll have a better idea after she recovers from this as to what's really going on. :)

11. I'm sorry!
Sounds like this one won't be as invasive as my mom's - so there's not much I can tell you. In my mom's case she had no pain at all from the surgery or during recovery, but she looked like she'd been popped in the eye by Tyson. Horribly swollen and bruised.

Not sure where they're going to put the shunt in, but if it's at the base of the skull she may have a lot of trouble w/ nausea. I say that because there was an older woman in ICU w/ my mom that had an aneurysm at the base of her skull operated on and the poor thing couldn't keep anything down. I guess that part of the brain controls that.

Best wishes to you and yours!

13. Thank you!
I think it's kinda on the side of the skull, if I remember correctly from my research. It goes in through there, and drains the ventricles down into the abdominal cavity, which absorbs the excess fluid. She has a blockage btwn ventricles 3 & 4. I'm a hypochondriac, so I read her MRIs and CatScans while she was at the store.... :P

thanks though, I'll kepp y'all posted

49. She's awesome actually.
You'd never know she had it done. I'm not sure what she'd say about lingering side effects, but from my end there don't appear to be any and she hasn't complained. There are a few things her memory is shaky (or just plain gone) about - but that's actually improved since the surgery.

Glad you're doing (mostly) well yourself! I know how scary that was for you!

and discharged on the 3rd day. I did not want to stay in the hospital. Done at JFk in Edison NJ.

It's great that you'll be able to be there for/with her, and that Mike will be there for you. Sounds like a quick recovery time; that's great. (I just had surgery with a 6-week recovery period.) What hospital will she be in for the surgery? Hugs to all of you
