...though she doesn't really look it from the picture - but wolves/wolf-mixes are usually better at abstract reasoning and learning by watching than are pure dogs. A wolf can watch you work a latch on a cage, and figure out how to open it himself; a dog generally has to learn by trial-and-error. Of course there are always exceptions to these sweeping generalizations. :) But the dog's breed in this story makes sense.

They're not for everybody (you have to let them know you're alpha or they'll run all over you) but they make better companions than people expect.
